FAQs

How do I compare business account options as a freelancer in Romania?

When comparing providers, think about how your business actually operates:

  • Do you invoice in GBP, RON, EUR, or a mix?
  • How often do you convert currencies?
  • Do you need a local Romanian IBAN for clients to pay you?
  • Do you need admin tools like invoicing or accounting integrations?
  • Are branch access or in-person support important to you?

A low monthly fee doesn't always mean lower overall costs. Currency exchange markups and international transfer charges can add up quickly for freelancers working across borders.

What paperwork is required to open a business account in Romania?

Requirements vary by provider, but MultiPass currently states that business account applicants in Romania typically need to provide7:

  • Passport or national ID
  • Proof of business registration in Romania, such as a registration certificate from the National Trade Register Office, ONRC9
  • Proof of address for the business and its representatives
  • Tax identification numbers
  • Company registration certificate
  • Identification documents of company directors and authorized signatories
  • Articles of Association or Memorandum of Association
  • Bank references, financial statements, and any additional documents required by the chosen bank

This list is for information purposes only and is not meant to be a comprehensive list of all the items that may be requested to verify identity. Eligibility is subject to verification. Additional documents may be requested.

What regulations should UK freelancers know?

If you're a UK freelancer working in Romania, there are a few key things to be aware of:

  • Romanian tax registration: If you operate as a PFA (Persoană Fizică Autorizată) or another self-employed structure in Romania, you'll need to register with ANAF (the Romanian National Agency for Fiscal Administration) and may be liable for Romanian income tax and social contributions.
  • VAT registration: If your annual Romanian turnover exceeds the local VAT registration threshold, Romania Company currently states that companies can register for VAT purposes by option or when exceeding the threshold of RON 300,000 for their annual turnover.10
  • UK tax obligations: The UK government currently states that UK residents normally pay UK tax on all their income, whether it’s from the UK or abroad.11
  • Double Taxation Agreement: The UK and Romania currently have a double taxation agreement in force, and Article 21 sets out rules for elimination of double taxation.12

It's strongly recommended to work with an accountant familiar with both UK and Romanian tax law.

Can HMRC see my account in Romania?

Potentially, yes. The OECD currently provides the Common Reporting Standard (CRS) materials as part of its tax transparency resource centre, describing the standard for automatic exchange of financial account information in tax matters.13

This means financial account information can, in principle, be exchanged automatically between participating tax authorities under CRS arrangements. The safest approach is to keep accurate records and declare all relevant income on your UK tax return.

Do I need a Romanian address to open a business account?

For most traditional Romanian banks, a Romanian registered business address is required, since the account is linked to your business registration in Romania.

Some digital-first providers are more flexible, but a local business address is generally expected as part of the registration process.

If you're not yet established in Romania, it's worth looking into how to register as a PFA or SRL before applying for a business account, as this is usually a prerequisite.

Can I use my UK business account for clients in Romania?

You can, but it's not always practical. Romanian clients and institutions may prefer Romanian account details, which can affect payment processes.

For international transfers to and from Romania, Wise Business lets you receive GBP in the UK using local account details, then send RON directly to Romanian recipients at the mid-market exchange rate, with fees shown before you make a transfer.

Disclaimer: The UK Wise Business pricing structure is changed on 26/11/2025. Receiving money, direct debits and getting paid features are not available with the Essential Plan which you can open for free. You’ll also get access to our invoice generating tool, payment links, QR codes and the ability to set up direct debits all within one account. Please check our website for the latest pricing information.

How does a business account in Romania affect my UK taxes?

Having a Romanian business account doesn't automatically change your UK tax position, but the income flowing through it may well be taxable in the UK if you are UK tax resident, as the UK government currently states that UK residents normally pay UK tax on all their income, whether it’s from the UK or abroad.11

The UK–Romania Double Taxation Convention is designed to eliminate double taxation in the circumstances set out in the agreement, but you'll need documentation to support any claims for double taxation relief.12
