Can You Use Airwallex in the UAE? UK Business Guide

Paola Faben Oliveira

For a UK business trading with the UAE, Airwallex can support certain AED collection and payment workflows - but the route, onboarding entity and card-currency settings all matter.

Airwallex lists the UK as an eligible country for business onboarding, while the UAE does not appear on its current eligible-country list. That means a UK-incorporated business can explore an Airwallex account, but it should check the exact AED Global Account and payment route it needs before relying on it for UAE operations.1

This guide explains whether Airwallex can work for UAE-related business payments, what its AED account options cover, how card spending and fees work, and the key limitations to check before you commit.

Can you use Airwallex in the UAE?

According to Airwallex's eligible-countries guidance, it can process applications only from businesses registered in the countries and territories on its list. The UK is listed; the UAE is not.1

That does not mean a UK business cannot work with UAE customers or suppliers through Airwallex. It does mean a UAE-incorporated business should not assume it can open an account through the UAE, while a UK-incorporated business should confirm its proposed AED setup with Airwallex before building a payment process around it.

UAE-related needWhat the current Airwallex information supports
Opening an account as a UK businessThe UK appears on Airwallex's eligible-country list for business onboarding.1
Opening an account as a UAE businessThe UAE does not appear on that list, so do not assume UAE-incorporated businesses are currently eligible to apply.1
Receiving domestic AED paymentsAirwallex lists domestic IPI and RTGS capability for its UAE AED Global Account, subject to the product's restrictions.2
Receiving AED through SWIFTAED appears in Airwallex's list of currencies that can receive international SWIFT payments.2
Using an Airwallex card in AEDAED is not listed as a direct-billing currency. Airwallex may debit the equivalent from the wallet's primary currency for another Visa-supported transaction currency.3

How AED Global Accounts work

According to Airwallex's Global Account guidance, the UAE AED Global Account row lists IPI and RTGS under domestic payments, and No under international payments.2

The same guidance also states that the UAE AED Global Account is not available to customers based in the UAE, and notes an industry restriction. In other words, an AED account detail is not a universal UAE business-account solution: availability depends on where the customer is based, its onboarding entity and the specific payment route.2

AED is separately included in Airwallex's international SWIFT acceptance list. That can matter if you need to receive an international SWIFT payment in AED, but it is different from having a UAE AED Global Account that accepts international payments.2

Can you pay UAE suppliers with Airwallex?

According to Airwallex's Global Account guidance, the UAE AED account information covers receiving routes. Before arranging a supplier payment, check the recipient's bank details, the currency, available route, quoted FX rate and transfer fee in your Airwallex account.

For a UK business, this is particularly important where the supplier expects AED locally rather than an international wire in another currency. A payment route that works for receiving AED is not automatically the same route that is available for sending it.

Airwallex cards and AED spending

According to Airwallex's card-currency guidance, its multi-currency cards can be used in any Visa-supported currency. However, AED is not included in the published direct-billing-currency list.3

For a transaction in another Visa-supported currency, Airwallex states that it attempts to debit the equivalent amount based on the wallet's primary currency. That means a UK business paying a hotel, travel provider or supplier card bill in AED should check the conversion treatment, rather than assuming an AED balance will be charged directly.3

Airwallex fees for UK businesses

The relevant Airwallex fee schedule is for customers of Airwallex UK Limited. It lists a monthly subscription alongside transaction and other charges, so the plan price is only one part of the cost to compare.4

Cost areaCurrent UK fee information to check
Explore planGBP 19 a month, or GBP 0 a month when the relevant GBP 10,000 qualifying threshold is met.4
Grow planGBP 49 a month.4
Accelerate planFrom GBP 999 a month.4
FX conversion0.5% for major currencies and 1% for other currencies.4
Global Account creationGBP 0.4
Local transfersGBP 0.4
SWIFT transfersGBP 10 for SHA or GBP 20 for OUR, with additional intermediary-bank wire fees possible on the OUR option.4

The schedule also lists 0% Global Account collection fees for currencies other than the named KRW, VND, BRL, MYR and PHP exceptions. That does not replace checking whether your particular AED route is available and eligible.4

Is Airwallex a practical option for UAE-related payments?

Airwallex may be worth considering if your business is UK-incorporated, is eligible to onboard, and has confirmed that its intended AED collection or payment route is supported. It may be less straightforward if your company is UAE-incorporated, needs a UAE AED Global Account while based in the UAE, or expects AED card spending to be billed directly from an AED wallet.1,2,3

Before choosing a provider, check the legal entity that will hold the account, whether you need to receive or send AED, the local or SWIFT route, the fee schedule and how each card transaction currency is billed. That is more useful than treating 'AED supported' as a simple yes-or-no feature.
