FAQs

How do I compare business account options as a freelancer in the Czech Republic?

Focus on how your money moves. If you mainly invoice in CZK, a local Czech account from providers such as Fio banka, MONETA, Air Bank or Komerční banka may cover day-to-day needs.

If you work across CZK, GBP and EUR, compare a local Czech account with a multi-currency provider to understand FX costs, international transfer fees, account details and invoicing features.

What paperwork is required to open a business account in the Czech Republic?

Traditional Czech banks may ask for a valid passport or national ID, Czech trade licence, IČO, registered Czech business address, and evidence of registration or notification to relevant authorities.16

Digital providers may handle onboarding online, but you may still need active business registration to complete compliance checks.

What regulations should UK freelancers know?

To freelance in the Czech Republic, UK nationals may need to register as a sole trader, known as OSVČ, through the Trade Licensing Office.16,17

Once registered, OSVČ may be subject to Czech income tax, health insurance and social security contributions. An optional flat-rate tax scheme, paušální daň, may be available for some freelancers.17

Can HMRC see my account in the Czech Republic?

Potentially, yes. Both the UK and the Czech Republic use international tax information-sharing rules such as the Common Reporting Standard, which can allow tax authorities to exchange financial account information.18

UK freelancers should keep clear records and declare foreign income where required.

Do I need a Czech address to open a business account?

For traditional Czech banks, you may need a registered Czech business address, particularly if the account is linked to OSVČ registration. Digital options may be more flexible at the initial application stage, but business registration and compliance checks still apply.

Can I use my UK business account for clients in the Czech Republic?

Yes, but it may not always be practical. Czech clients may prefer local CZK account details for domestic transfers, and international payments can involve extra fees and slower processing.

A local Czech account can help with CZK invoicing, while a multi-currency account may help with GBP, EUR and other cross-border payments.

How does a business account in the Czech Republic affect my UK taxes?

A Czech business account does not remove UK tax obligations if you remain UK tax resident. You may still need to declare Czech income on your UK Self Assessment return.

The UK–Czech double taxation agreement may help reduce the risk of the same income being taxed twice, but the exact treatment depends on your residency status and circumstances.19
