If you have an IG trading account but no longer use it, you’ll need to know how to close it down. But how easy is it, and how do you get started?

If you no longer use your trading account with IG and you don’t have any open positions or active trades, you might be tempted to just let it lie dormant.
However, this isn’t recommended. IG charges a monthly inactivity fee for all accounts that have been inactive for two years or more, if they still hold funds. The account will be closed by IG at that point, but you may be charged a rolling inactivity fee of £12 a month.¹ You should receive a notification from IG though before this happens.
To avoid the fee, it’s best to close your account down if you don’t use it. We’ll run through how to do it next.

Unfortunately, no. Shutting down your account isn’t as simple as logging in and clicking a ‘close account’ button. You’ll need to follow the steps above to contact IG to officially request the closure of your account.
