If your Halifax credit card is stolen or lost, your first instinct might be to cancel it.
You can if you like, but there’s also another method which can put a temporary freeze on it. This can be useful if you’ve lost it, giving you time to find the card. But it also prevents unauthorised people from using your card.
The easiest way to temporarily deactivate your card is in the Halifax mobile banking app. Simply follow these steps:³
If it’s certain that your Halifax credit card has been stolen or you definitely can’t find it, you’ll need to cancel it right away. You can do this by filling in a short form on online or mobile banking, or calling Halifax.

If you’ve cancelled it though, you won’t be able to reactivate it. You’ll need to open a new account with Halifax.
Once your credit card has been cancelled, you’ll need to dispose of it properly. The easiest way to do this is to cut or shred it, making sure that the chip is destroyed. Then, dispose of the pieces in separate bins.
