By phone

You can cancel a Halifax card simply by calling the bank. Follow these steps:²

  1. Firstly, make sure you have your 16-digit credit card number handy
  2. Call 0345 944 4555 (available 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week)
  3. Speak to an advisor, who’ll guide you through the steps to cancel your card.

By post

If you prefer, you can also send a letter to request the closure of your credit card account. Here’s what you need to do:²

  1. Write a letter requesting to cancel your Halifax card
  2. Include your name, date of birth, phone number, email address and 16-digit credit card number
  3. Make sure you sign the letter
  4. Post it to: Lloyds Banking Group PLC, Credit Card Operations, BX1 1LT.

This method is a bit slower, as you’ll need to wait for your letter to be delivered and processed. But it could be preferable to some, as the request will have been made in writing.

How to temporarily deactivate your Halifax credit card online if it’s lost or stolen?

If your Halifax credit card is stolen or lost, your first instinct might be to cancel it.

You can if you like, but there’s also another method which can put a temporary freeze on it. This can be useful if you’ve lost it, giving you time to find the card. But it also prevents unauthorised people from using your card.

The easiest way to temporarily deactivate your card is in the Halifax mobile banking app. Simply follow these steps:³

  1. Sign in to the app
  2. Select ‘Manage card’
  3. Choose ‘Card freezes and limits’ and select the card you want to freeze
  4. The card is frozen immediately, but you can unfreeze it if you find your card.

If it’s certain that your Halifax credit card has been stolen or you definitely can’t find it, you’ll need to cancel it right away. You can do this by filling in a short form on online or mobile banking, or calling Halifax.

How to reactivate a lost Halifax credit card?

If you manage to find your lost Halifax card, you can simply head back into the mobile app and unfreeze it using the steps above.
