THE BEATLES

The Scousers' Guide to Liverpool

Picture yourself in a boat on a river, with tangerine trees and marmalade hair… Only that boat is one of Liverpool’s famous, amphibious Duckmarines and the tangerine trees and marmalade hair… well, maybe they’re caused by the slightly too aggressive tint in your Ray Bans’ lenses.

It’s afternoon, you’re in Liverpool and, loaded up with Eurovision vibes, you’re feeling musical. There is no city on earth better suited than Liverpool — home to Cilla Black, The Real Thing, Elvis Costello, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Atomic Kitten (!) — and yes…

The Beatles.

Though their last concert may have been 54 years ago, The Beatles are everywhere in Liverpool, their popularity enduring. No surprise, then, that Liverpudlians think The Beatles are the Scouse act most likely to win Eurovision (Atomic Kitten came second… their flame eternal) — and 45% would pay £1,000 to see them play again.

While we can’t offer you that, we can give some pointers on how to get the true Beatles experience.

A (£2.50!) pint on Matthew Street — which locals rank the sixth best thing to do in Liverpool — gives you a good idea of what it was like in their early, suit-and-tie, bowl cut days. The pubs are great, the atmosphere rowdy and the band’s music can be heard from every doorway. Beatlemania has never felt so heady.

There too you can find the Cavern Club, where the Beatles were first spotted and where you can have a great night out. And while a horse may not be dancing the Waltz, you can — or you could, more sanely, belt out the lyrics to Love Me Do, I Get by With a Little Help From My Friends, or Come Together.

The Beatles, though, are more than just music. They remain a cultural phenomenon. Nowhere tells this better than The Beatles Story, an immersive, authentic journey through the lives of the Fab Four.

Located by the exceedingly pleasant Royal Albert Dock, The Beatles Story takes visitors through key locations and moments from the band’s career including The Casbah Club, Hamburg, Abbey Road Studios and cracking America. Nearby, you can also get a shot with the Four themselves.
