It’s afternoon, you’re in Liverpool and, loaded up with Eurovision vibes, you’re feeling musical. There is no city on earth better suited than Liverpool — home to Cilla Black, The Real Thing, Elvis Costello, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Atomic Kitten (!) — and yes…
The Beatles.
Though their last concert may have been 54 years ago, The Beatles are everywhere in Liverpool, their popularity enduring. No surprise, then, that Liverpudlians think The Beatles are the Scouse act most likely to win Eurovision (Atomic Kitten came second… their flame eternal) — and 45% would pay £1,000 to see them play again.
While we can’t offer you that, we can give some pointers on how to get the true Beatles experience.
A (£2.50!) pint on Matthew Street — which locals rank the sixth best thing to do in Liverpool — gives you a good idea of what it was like in their early, suit-and-tie, bowl cut days. The pubs are great, the atmosphere rowdy and the band’s music can be heard from every doorway. Beatlemania has never felt so heady.
