THE FOOD

The Scousers' Guide to Liverpool

For 56% of Liverpudlians, their city’s best food is local — British or Liverpudlian dishes.

Scousers love scouse. The sumptuous stew, made from beef or lamb, potatoes, and root veg and left to simmer for hours, is an eponymous delight.

Now, it may sound a bit heavy, a bit too comforting, for a hot day in May — but don’t let that put you off. For 56% of Liverpudlians, their city’s best food is local — British or Liverpudlian dishes.

So it would be wrong not to try scouse and, to do so, may we recommend the uber authentic Maggie May’s Cafe, the trendy SKAUS or even Liverpool Cathedral. Yes, the largest cathedral in the UK prides itself on its servings of stew, as well as the length of its tower.

Of course, ‘local’ doesn’t just mean scouse. Visitors to the UK often seek out fish and chips, only to be left disappointed by some sodden, sad mess served by some tourist trap. Don’t be one of those people! Head to Fylde, Yanni’s or a branch of The Good Catch for something proper. And, don’t forget to find yourself a flake while you’re wandering around — though we can’t promise Danny will be on the Mr. Whippy machine.

Tired of British classics? Firstly, how dare you. Secondly, fine. Luckily, Liverpool is chock-full of great alternatives. Liverpudlians say that their city is great for all sorts of cuisines: two thirds say the local Chinese food is great, while Italian, Indian, Mexican and Japanese are all popular.

Baltic Market gives you brilliant variety, offering everything from gyros to pizza. Renshaw Street Market is another hit — the market specialises in Asian food (check out the Cantonese cooking at Mong Kok Dim Sum), but also offers burritos and a top bar.

And if you’re still in doubt? Well, 22% of Liverpudlians say that grabbing a bite on Bold Street is the best thing to do in the city. The street is home to all sorts of cuisine, plus plenty of vintage clothes shops in between.
