Ria money transfer review: US guide [2025]
Here’s all you really need to know about making international transfers with Ria. We've done the research for you, so kick back and read on.
If you’re a customer with TD Bank, the good news is that it offers international transfers to 65 countries, in a choice of currencies¹.
In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know on how to make a TD Bank international transfer.
Remember though that banks aren’t the only option for sending money internationally. You could save money with an alternative such as Wise, which has low fees² and uses the mid-market exchange rate - but more on this later.
Unfortunately, it’s not free to send a wire transfer with TD Bank. However, the bank offers a simple set of fees for international wires from standard personal accounts:
Transaction type | TD Bank international wire transfer fees³ |
---|---|
Incoming wire (both domestic and international) | $15 |
Outgoing wire (international) | $50 |
A quick thing to note with the table above is that these fees are only for sending international payments with TD Bank in the US. There are also branches of TD Bank in Canada, but you’ll need to contact the bank to confirm costs there. Also, there may be different charges for TD Bank business accounts and student accounts.
Another thing to be aware of is that these are only TD Bank’s international wire transfer fees.
When making an international transfer, multiple intermediary banks may be involved in the process, as per SWIFT transfers. These banks may charge additional fees, which are not determined by TD Bank. Additionally, the exchange rate significantly impacts the final amount of money that will reach the destination account.
💡 Banks can set their own exchange rates when they convert money into a foreign currency, so rather than using the rate you’ll find on Google, they effectively add a markup. This means that they get to keep the difference between the mid-market rate and the one they gave you. |

To help you see how much you could save with Wise compared to using your bank, here’s a quick comparison.
Let’s imagine you want to send $1000 USD from the United States to a friend living in the UK. Here’s how much it’ll cost with TD Bank US and Wise:
Provider | Fee | Exchange rate | Total cost |
---|---|---|---|
TD Bank (US) | $50 | Mid-market rate + markup | $50 + exchange rate markup + likely fees from intermediary banks |
Wise | $6.93² | The mid-market exchange rate | $6.93 via ACH pay-in method |
Send money with Wise and you can see exactly what it’ll cost before you send it. The cool thing about Wise that unlike traditional methods, Wise operates through local bank transfers, eliminating international and intermediary fees – as Wise isn’t a bank but a Money Transfer Business (MSB).
And you’ll always get the mid-market exchange rate, like the one you see on Google. This means that as much of your money as possible arrives at its destination.
