Things to keep in mind when transferring high amounts

If you’re sending a lot of money, either domestically or internationally, it can be a bit daunting. Here are a few things to bear in mind to make sure the process is as stress free as possible:

  • Check the specific transfer limits which apply to your account - and have the recipient of your payment check if there are any receiving limits imposed on their account

  • Some high value transfers require additional paperwork for verification, to prove that the source of the funds is legitimate. Check with Bank of America if this will apply to your transfer before starting

  • Bear in mind that the costs of sending a high value payment - especially overseas - can be quite high. With international transfers the bulk of the cost is often an exchange rate markup which racks up very quickly when you’re sending a high value payment. Compare the exchange rate you’re offered against the mid-market rate to see any fees which are included in the costs here

  • Consider using a third party specialist provider like Wise if you’re sending money overseas. Limits are generally set high, with low fees and the mid-market rate*
