AIB®¹ operates throughout Ireland and offers personal, private, business and corporate banking services. If you were living in Ireland for work, study or any other reason, and opened an AIB account, you’ll need to close your account when you move away.
This helps you to avoid ongoing fees associated with the account, and also ensures your account can’t be fraudulently used. This guide walks through how to close an AIB account from abroad, online, or in writing.
Yes. The options to close your AIB account do depend on the type of account you have, but can include closing your account online, by mail or in person². This gives a couple of choices for people who no longer live in Ireland, depending on the account you have.
Bear in mind that you’ll need to make sure your account is in good standing before you can close it. This means there are no debts or overdrafts associated with the account, and no unpaid fees.
If you have a savings account product which has a withdrawal notice period, you’ll also need to make sure you’ve followed the rules about the amount of notice given before your account is terminated.
You can close the AIB Online Saver, Online Notice Deposit 7 and Personal Demand accounts online. If you have an Online Notice Deposit 7 you need to give the relevant notice before your account can be closed.
Closing an account with AIB online is done through the AIB online banking system, so make sure you can still complete the required verification checks and you still have all your online banking information handy before you get started.
You’ll be able to close your AIB account from abroad either by mail or through the AIB online banking system if you have an eligible account.
If your account can not be closed online it’s worth calling AIB to understand what information is needed to close your account by mail, and to avoid unnecessary delays. If your account is eligible for online deletion, here’s what to do:
Check your account can be closed online, and then log in to AIB internet banking. You’ll need your registration number and PAC. If you’ve forgotten these you will need to call the bank to ask about your options for account closure.
Once you’re into your online banking, click on Accounts and select Account Management. You’ll see the option to close your account, and can follow the instructions on screen to complete your request.
AIB will need to check that your account can be closed, before processing your request. You’ll be notified once the account is closed.
If you have any problems you can also call AIB from the US, on +353 1771 2424. You’ll need to have your registration number and PAC ready when you call³.
