When investing, your capital is at risk. The value of your investments can go down as well as up and you may get back less than you put in. Tax treatment depends on your individual circumstances and may be subject to future change. The content of this article is provided for informational purposes only and is not intended to be, nor does it constitute, any form of personal advice.
Investments in a currency other than GBP are exposed to currency exchange risk. Currency exchange rates are constantly changing, which may affect the value of the investment in GBP terms. You could lose money in GBP even if the stock price rises in the currency of origin. Stocks listed on overseas exchanges may be subject to additional dealing and exchange rate charges, and may have other tax implications, and may not provide the same, or any, regulatory protection as in the UK.

The great news is that there are no XTB account fees to worry about. You can sign up for free and pay no monthly subscription or plan fees, with no minimum deposit required either.
However, a custody fee of 0.02% per annum (min. £10) will apply if your average portfolio value exceeds €250,000 EUR or the currency equivalent.1
A custody fee is typically charged by investment platforms for the safekeeping, administration and reporting of your assets.
Like some other investment platforms, XTB does have some commission fees for buying or selling shares.
They don’t apply to many investors, as you can trade up to a volume of €100,000 EUR a month without any XTB trading fees. Exceed this threshold though and there’s a fee of 0.2% (min. £10) to pay on the excess.1
XTB charges foreign exchange (FX) fees when you trade overseas stock. This is for converting the share price into GBP.
It’s a flat fee of 0.5% for every conversion, and this applies to trading activity with both Stocks & ETFs, and CFD instruments.1
Yes, if you don't use your account for 12 months, an XTB inactivity fee of £10 a month will apply. This is only if all three of these apply at the same time:1

It also has no fees for making deposits to your account, but warns that some deposit methods may involve additional fees charged by payment providers. So, it’s worth checking these before making a deposit.
When trading on overseas markets, the FX fees charged by investment platforms can soon add up - and start eating into your returns.
There is a solution though - you can use Wise to avoid or minimise foreign exchange fees when investing.
Open a Wise account and you can access local account details in USD, EUR, GBP, AUD and more. This means you can hold funds in your chosen currency until you’re ready to invest, then use your Wise account to fund your transaction on XTB or your chosen investment platform.
