A New Era for Money Transfers in Mexico
Our entry into the Mexican market marks a pivotal moment in our goal to enhance cross-border payments. Mexican nationals can now send money to over 40 currencies and 160 countries with ease, using a fully digital process through the Wise app or website.
Mexico offers an unique opportunity to serve a large and growing market with high demand for quality financial services. In 2024 alone, consumers moved approximately $168 billion USD in and out of the country, and this figure is expected to grow, potentially doubling by 2028.
Addressing Transparency Issues
Beyond offering a more convenient and affordable way to move money across borders, Wise is committed to tackling one of Mexico's biggest challenges: the lack of transparency in international payments. In 2024, Mexicans lost $446 million USD in hidden fees when sending money abroad. These hidden costs are often buried in fine print or bundled with other charges, making them difficult to detect.
When it comes to sending money internationally, banks and other providers in Mexico can conceal up to 10.4% of the costs in hidden fees, which significantly inflate transfer costs and undermine market competitiveness. Unfortunately, this trend is projected to continue, with losses nearing $514 million USD in 2025.
