For customers in the UK, the maximum you can send is £375,000 per day (or the currency equivalent). This is the limit for both UK and international payments.¹
If this isn’t enough and you need to send more, you may be able to get support from Xe’s large transfers team. If you send more than $50,000 USD a year (or local currency equivalent), you may be eligible to use this service.²
Otherwise, you’ll need to break your large payment into multiple smaller ones spread over a few days.
Xe doesn’t support sending money through CHAPS, which are designed for making fast, secure large transfers in the UK with no upper limits.

Xe has been running for over 25 years and uses a range of security measures to keep your account, data, and money secure when making transfers. These include:³
As Xe isn’t a bank, it doesn’t offer FSCS protection for your money. But it does use something called safeguarding, where client money is held with reputable credit institutes separately from the company’s own funds.
Xe transfer times vary depending on the currency, destination and payment method. Once sent, you can track your transfer using the Xe app or on the website, to see an estimate of when it will arrive.
There are two key timescales you need to know about with Xe:
Adding these two together gives you the total estimated time your payment will take, from start to finish.
Here’s a quick look at average transfer times with Xe:³
| Payment method | Transfer time to Xe | Transfer time to recipient | Total transfer time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Card | Often instant | 1 to 3 working days | 1 to 3 working days |
| Bank transfers | Up to 2 business days | 1 to 3 working days | Up to 5 working days |
Now we come to the important issue of fees - how much do Xe large transfers cost?
There’s no short answer to this, as Xe transfer fees vary depending on quite a few factors. These include:⁴
The good news is that you can see the applicable fees when you start to set up your large transfer with Xe. Enter the details of the payment, and the fee will be displayed.
When sending an international transfer with Xe, you’ll also need to check the exchange rate - as well as the upfront transfer fee.
Xe uses its own standard exchange rate for converting currency, and this is likely to include an FX margin on the mid-market rate.⁵ This varies, but you can check the rate you’ll get when setting up your transfer.
Whether you're buying property, supporting family overseas or making another high-value payment, the total cost of an international transfer goes beyond the fee you pay upfront. Comparing the overall cost before you send can help you keep more of your money.
Banks and other providers may claim to have “no fees” but they could be adding a sneaky mark-up to their exchange rate. This can impact your budget by up to 2% when sending money abroad. On a £50,000 transfer, you could save up to £1,000 with Wise vs your bank.
Wise has built its own payment network that allows customers to send money internationally for less. You’ll get the mid-market exchange rate (close to the one you see on Google) with no hidden markups and low, transparent fees.
