If you're a British citizen and living abroad, you have until 23:59 UTC on Monday 22 May to register to vote in the UK General Election.

But did you know there are three ways to do it?

• British citizens living abroad (so long as you were registered to vote in the UK within the previous 15 years - or, in some cases, if you were too young to have registered when you left the UK). Just register to vote in the normal way. But you may want to apply for a proxy vote if you're worried your postal vote won’t arrive in time.
• Those serving abroad in the armed forces or with a family member who is serving abroad in the armed forces need to register here
• Crown servants and British Council employees need to register here.

But it’s not just Brits who can vote in the General Election. Many Commonwealth citizens living in the UK can also register to cast their ballot.

If you're a citizen of a qualifying country and a permanent resident in the UK then register to vote like a Brit here.

Qualifying countries are:

*Citizens of Fiji and Zimbabwe retain their voting rights despite the countries having been suspended from the Commonwealth.

The following persons cannot vote in a UK Parliament election:

• Members of the House of Lords
• EU citizens (other than UK, Republic of Ireland, Cyprus and Malta) resident in the UK
• Anyone other than British, Irish and qualifying Commonwealth citizens
• Convicted persons detained in pursuance of their sentences, excluding contempt of court (though remand prisoners, unconvicted prisoners and civil prisoners can vote if they are on the electoral register)
• Anyone found guilty within the previous five years of corrupt or illegal practices in connection with an election
