Your biggest freelance fears and how to solve them

Anna Allgaier

Fear and I are great friends. We go way back. When I catastrophe about something, my go-to tends to be fueling the fire. It hasn’t been effective so far, but I’ll keep you posted. The 100th time’s the charm.

Before I attempt to not lose it over everything I’m going to test it out Plan B with you: finding solutions.

Who knew?

I already looked at your biggest expat fears, and now, I’m here to put out the fires of freelancers all around the world.

Your biggest freelance fears and how to solve them

Fear #1 😱

I won’t know where to start

Solution #1 😬

I get it, the idea of setting up a business has ‘adult’ written all over it. Responsibility, research, registering, revenue. So many R’s. But it isn’t as complicated as it sounds, and there are plenty of resources out there to help you get going. As the old saying goes “Those who seek Google, shall find.”

Before you get down to business, you’ll need a business account. That’s where we come in.

Set up local account details in 10 major currencies with the world’s most international account. Get paid by clients all over the world, at the same speed as someone who lives in your hood. And our international debit card is pretty snazzy too; Complete with low conversion fees and no subscription charges, obviously.

Fear #2 😱

Taxes

Solution #2 😬

Firstly, same. Secondly…

Knock knock
Who’s there?
US AGAIN.

Taxes are vile, they take a while but be prepared to smile. With that beautiful new business account, you can connect to accounting software like Xero, QuickBooks and FreeAgent. You’re too busy with all your fancy new clients to cry over spreadsheets.

Fear #3 😱

Saying goodbye to a “secure and stable” job

Solution #3 😬

Excuse me, where is the self belief? The scary part of freelancing is everything being in your hands, but that’s also the solution. Every job, well, everything, comes with a bit of risk. When you’re freelancing, it’s all about being prepared. There will be months where you’re raking it in, and there will be other months where you aren’t making as much. So save, budget, and have faith that you’ve got this. OMG we can help with that too. Say hello to Wise Jars. A way to ensure you’ve got consistency is to pitch yourself for stable contract jobs as well as ad hoc work. Then you know your monthly bills are covered until you find the next gig.

Fear #4 😱

Ditching the pitching

Solution #4 😬

No, you can’t get around it. As a freelancer you need to pitch your pants off. It’s like dating. It’s uncomfortable the first few times, there will be rejection, but before you know it, you’ll meet the one. Then you’ll meet another one, and another one, and another one. God, I hate Hinge. Anyway, you’re going to ace this.

Fear #5 😱

Work life balance

Solution #5 😬

You’re going to be hustling, and you’ll likely feel pressure to find clients when fear #3 kicks in. Clientele aside, you actually have to do the work too. But that’s ok. Get used to structuring your time, you’ll find it makes you more efficient when you allow yourself cut off hours. Have a routine, allow yourself rest, and remember you got into freelancing in the first place for a sense of freedom. Go on holiday, work from abroad, basically, reward yourself.
