What is the dollar sign?

The dollar sign looks like this:

It’s used as the main currency symbol in a number of countries:

The United States (US dollar)
Canada (Canadian dollar)
Australia (Australian dollar)
New Zealand (New Zealand dollar)
Singapore (Singapore dollar).

Does the dollar sign come before or after the number?

The dollar sign generally comes before the number, and there’s no space in between. So when you’re writing a sum of money such as ten dollars, you’d write it like this: $10.

What’s the dollar abbreviation?

On the foreign exchange market, the US dollar is abbreviated to USD.

But other countries which use the dollar have a different three-letter code, such as:

Canada - CAD
Australia - AUD
New Zealand - NZD
Singapore - SGD

How do you type a dollar sign on keyboard (Mac and PC)?

Let’s look at Windows PCs first. There’s a simple keyboard shortcut you can use whenever you need to insert the dollar sign.

Just hold down the shift key, and press the number 4 at the same time. This may be on the top row, or at the side if you have a full-size keyboard with its own number pad.

For Mac devices, it’s just the same. You just need to hold down shift and press the number 4 key.

How to insert a dollar sign on a mobile device (iOS and Android)?

Using a smartphone, tablet or other mobile device? It’s pretty easy to insert a dollar sign into a message or in a search query.

For both iOS and Android devices, you simply need to switch to the numbers and symbols keyboard. The $ sign should be one of the options you can choose.

How to get the dollar sign in popular word processors – without typing?

Don’t have a keyboard or it isn’t working? The good news is that there’s a way you can insert a dollar sign on your word processor without typing.

On applications such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs, you can simply follow these steps:

Go to Insert from the drop-down menu at the top
Select ‘Symbol’ on Word, or ‘Special Characters’ on Google Docs
You should be able to select the $ sign. On Google Docs, you may need to select ‘Symbol’ and then ‘Currency’ from the category menus.
