How to close a Western Union account in the UK
Find out how to close your Western Union account, what to do before submitting your request and what happens to your personal information.
No longer using your Xoom account? Before closing it, there are a few things to check, including any pending transfers and records you may want to keep.
This guide explains how to request account closure through Xoom Customer Service.¹ It also covers what to do beforehand, what happens to your saved details and personal information, and how closure affects a linked PayPal account.
We’ll also show you an alternative way to manage your money internationally - with the Wise Account.

Take care of any unfinished transfers and save the information you might need before asking Xoom to close your account.
Check for pending transactions. Closing your account is separate from cancelling a transaction. You can usually cancel a money transfer if the funds have not yet reached the recipient. To check, open your Activity List, select the relevant transaction and look for the Cancel icon. Confirm the cancellation in the pop-up window.²
The cancellation option will not appear if the transaction has already been completed or Xoom cannot reverse the funds. Mobile reloads and bill payments are often processed within minutes, so they usually cannot be cancelled once authorised.²
Don’t assume that closing your Xoom account will automatically cancel a transaction. Deal with each unfinished payment separately and wait for confirmation where appropriate.
Save your transaction history. Closing your account removes your access to previous transactions. Download or retain any emailed statements, receipts and transaction numbers you may need for your records.¹
Xoom sends account statements by email to customers who’ve been active within the previous 12 months. These include completed, cancelled and in-progress transactions initiated during the statement period.³
Save your recipient details. Closing the account also removes access to your saved contacts.¹ Make a separate note of any names, phone numbers, addresses or payment details you expect to need for future transfers.
Check your linked PayPal account. Closing Xoom doesn’t close PayPal. However, Xoom’s User Agreement says that closing a linked PayPal account will also close the linked Xoom account.⁸ Decide whether you only want to close Xoom or whether you need to manage your PayPal account separately.
Xoom’s official guidance directs customers to contact its Customer Service team for help closing an account.¹ You can submit the request through the online support form or call the UK support number.
Follow these steps:
The form asks for your email address, name, subject and description. It also includes optional fields for the receiving country and Xoom transaction number.⁴
Don’t include your password, full card number or online-banking credentials in the message. Xoom may contact you for further information or verification before processing the request.
UK customers can also call Xoom Customer Service on +44 207 949 4440.⁴
Have the following information available:
Tell the representative clearly that you want to close your Xoom account rather than cancel only one transaction.
Xoom doesn’t publish a specific identity-verification checklist for voluntary account closure. Customer Service may ask questions or request information to confirm that you are the account holder.
If you can’t sign in, try resetting your Xoom password before submitting the closure request.
Go to Password Recovery, enter the email address used for your Xoom account, and follow the instructions sent by email. If you normally sign in through PayPal, you’ll need to follow PayPal’s password reset process instead.⁵
Xoom may ask you to verify one of the payment methods linked to your account during a password reset. You can skip this check, but doing so removes the saved payment methods and contact information from the account.⁵
You can still use Xoom’s Customer Service form without signing in. Enter the email address associated with your account where possible and explain that you cannot log in.⁴ Customer Service may need additional information to locate the account and verify your request.
If you believe someone else has accessed your account, report the suspicious activity to reportfraud@xoom.com and contact your bank or card provider where necessary. Xoom advises customers to report suspected account takeovers as soon as possible.
Closing your Xoom account doesn’t mean that all information associated with it will be erased immediately.
Xoom is a PayPal service. That means that PayPal may need to retain information connected with financial services to comply with legal obligations, prevent fraud, collect fees, resolve disputes, assist investigations and protect against legal risks.⁶
PayPal’s UK Privacy Statement says personal information used during the customer relationship is generally kept for the duration of that relationship and for 10 years afterwards, or for another period required by local law. .⁷
You can separately ask PayPal to delete eligible personal data. Xoom says it will delete information where it is lawful to do so, but it may refuse or limit the request if it cannot verify your identity or has a conflicting legal obligation.⁶
Account closure and data deletion are therefore related but separate processes. You may lose access to the information in your Xoom account while PayPal continues to retain certain internal records.
Xoom doesn’t publish an official timeframe for voluntarily closing an account.
The time required could depend on whether Customer Service needs to verify your identity, request additional information or deal with an outstanding transaction. Check your inbox after submitting the request and respond promptly to any questions.
Xoom’s statement guidance notes that an attempted closure may not always be completed successfully. If you continue receiving account statements, contact Customer Service to confirm that the account has been fully closed.³
Xoom doesn’t publish a process for reactivating the same closed account.
Its closure guidance says you may need to verify your personal information again if you sign up for Xoom in the future.¹ This suggests that you might need to register again rather than simply reopen the previous account. Eligibility and verification requirements would apply at that time.

Xoom doesn’t publish a self-service closure setting in its app. Its official guidance tells customers to contact Customer Service for help closing the account.¹
No. Xoom says you’ll continue to have full access to your PayPal account after closing Xoom. However, closing a PayPal account also closes the Xoom account linked to it.¹ ⁸
Xoom says customers should contact Customer Service to close their account and stop receiving account statement emails. If statements continue arriving, the account may not have been completely closed, so contact support again.³
