Can I use Revolut in the USA?
Can I use Revolut in the USA? A handy guide to using a Revolut card to spend in US dollars, including fees and exchange rates.
Heading to the US from the UK any time soon? Whether you’re mini-breaking in NYC, road tripping on Route 66 or planning a permanent move across the pond, you’ll need to find the best way to spend in US dollars.
The British digital bank Monzo is a good option for spending internationally, especially if you’re already a customer. But does Monzo work in the US? Read on to find out everything you need to know.
Monzo is also a trusted partner of Wise Platform. Through our integration, customers of Monzo are able to benefit from the same fast and convenient payments as Wise customers, all from within their existing app.
Yes, you can use Monzo in America. It may be a UK-based bank, but it’s really good for travel and international use.
This means that as a personal customer, you can use both your Monzo account and card while in the US.
And as an added bonus, there’s no need to tell Monzo in advance that you’ll be spending abroad.¹
Your UK-issued Monzo debit card will work in the US. You should be able to use it wherever Mastercard payments are accepted, spending just like you would in the UK. So you can use it to pay in US stores, restaurants, gas stations, hotels and airports.
If you need to withdraw cash, you can withdraw up to £200 a month from US ATMs without any Monzo fees (although you’ll need to check whether the ATM itself charges fees).²
US dollars are one of the many currencies supported by the Monzo debit card.
When you spend or withdraw cash, the currency will be converted automatically from GBP to USD. The card provider - in this case, Mastercard - will do the currency conversion.
The good news here is that Monzo uses Mastercard’s exchange rate without adding any mark-ups or hidden charges.¹ This should mean that your holiday spending money goes further.
One important thing to remember when spending or withdrawing cash abroad using a UK debit card is to always pay or withdraw cash abroad in the local currency.
Some vendors and ATMs will give you the option to pay in your home currency of GBP. However, this means that they’ll use their own exchange rate for the currency conversion. This could end up being expensive for you.

The great thing about Monzo is that it doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees when you spend abroad using your debit card.
It’s not quite the same story for ATM withdrawals. If you’re travelling in the US, you’ll only be able to withdraw £200 in cash a month without incurring any fees. Once you go above this limit, there’s a 3% fee to pay.²
This is unlike how Monzo works in Europe, where customers can make fee-free unlimited cash withdrawals within the EEA.
It’s also wise to watch out for ATM operator’s fees.
But other than that, there aren’t any other fees to worry about when you travel with Monzo.
Monzo is a British-based bank, but it launched operations in the US in 2022.³ This means that you can open an account if you’ve moved to America or will be spending a long time there.

And that’s pretty much it - everything you need about using your Monzo account and card in the US. As USD is supported for spending and there aren’t many fees to worry about, you can simply hop off the plane and start spending.
It’s also good to know that you can take advantage of Monzo's partnership with Wise to send money overseas.
Also, if you need the ability to handle several currencies at once (if you’re living or working between countries, for example), the money services provider Wise can be a good fit.
With the Wise account, you can send and spend in 40+ currencies and receive money like a local in 8+ currencies. It’s not a bank account but offers many similar features.
