This article gets you one step closer to your affordable vacation in Mexico by detailing your options for VAT refund in Mexico as a tourist.
Planning a holiday to Mexico? Whether you’re travelling there for leisure, work or to see family, you’ll want to find the best way to spend in the local currency during your trip.
In this guide, we’ll take a look at whether you can use a Revolut card in Mexico. This includes details of fees and exchange rates for using your Revolut account abroad, and whether or not you can spend in Mexican pesos (MXN).
And while you’re weighing up options for holiday spending, make sure to check out the Wise card.
It can be used in 175 countries, including Mexico. You can spend like a local as soon as you land, as the Wise card automatically converts your money to MXN at the mid-market exchange rate.
Yes, you can use your Revolut card when you travel to Mexico.
It can be used for purchases and transactions wherever Visa and Mastercard are accepted¹. This includes shops, bars and restaurants, and ATM withdrawals too.
Yes, the Mexican peso (MXN) is one of the 140 currencies¹ Revolut supports for spending. You can also hold and exchange MXN in your Revolut account².
You have two options for spending in Mexico using your Revolut card. You can either convert GBP to MXN in the Revolut app before you travel, topping up your balance with the amount of local currency you want to spend.
Or you can spend as you go, and the Revolut card will convert your money to MXN automatically³.
There are a few fees related to using your Revolut card in other countries. It all depends when you use your card or carry out a currency conversion using the Revolut app - and how much you spend/withdraw.
Let’s take a look:
Transaction | Revolut fee⁴ |
---|---|
Additional merchant surcharge fees (for paying by card) | Set by the merchant (if applicable) |
Currency exchange transactions above £1,000 | 0.5% |
Currency exchanges on weekends | 1% |
ATM withdrawals over £200 (or more than 5 withdrawals) | 2%⁵ |
There’s also the exchange rate to think about. Revolut uses the mid-market rate (with no mark-up added on top) for converting your money. But if you carry out any transactions requiring a currency conversion at the weekend, it will add a 1% fee on top.
You’ll also pay extra costs for converting more than £1,000 at once, or withdrawing more than £200 from an overseas ATM.
If you choose to be charged in your home currency when using your Revolut card to shop abroad, the merchant will apply their own exchange rate⁴. This usually has a margin added on top of the mid-market rate, so it ends up costing you extra.
If you’ll be staying in Mexico for a while, you may be thinking of getting a Revolut account there.
Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait a little while. Revolut Mexico is on the way, but at the moment you can only sign up to be on the waiting list⁶.
However, you can still use Revolut to send money from the UK to Mexico.
Revolut isn’t the only game in town when it comes to travel spending, and it could pay to compare all options.
Open a Wise multi-currency account online and you can get an international Wise card. This can be used for spending and ATM withdrawals in 175 countries, including Mexico.
The Wise card automatically converts your pounds to pesos when you spend. But unlike some other providers, it does the conversion at the mid-market exchange rate. And you’ll get this same great rate all the time, even at weekends.
There’s just a small fee to carry out the conversion. Or if you already have MXN in your account, it’s fee-free⁷.
Need cash? You can even use your Wise card to withdraw up to £200 a month from Mexican ATMs for free (although ATM providers may charge their own fee).
