Ranked: the worst movie accents of all time

Anna Allgaier

Let me preface this article by saying that I am in no position to judge. As a woman of the world, with an incredibly confused accent, and someone who sounds atrocious when speaking French, I know how difficult it can be to nail an accent.

And if you’re reading this, you’re probably a Wise user (and if you’re not, ummm why?), which means you’re probably a globetrotter too. So you’ll be all too familiar with the trials and tribulations that come with perfecting an accent in a foreign language.

But at least when we make an oopsie it isn’t filmed, and put into the universe forever and ever…and ever.

I’ve compiled a list of the worst movie accents of all time. But before we indulge in a bit of Schadenfreude, I should say that anyone out there learning to speak a new lingo is a HERO. You’re brave, you’re beautiful, you’re a borderless little maverick.

That’s enough affirmation.

Let’s lol at some famous people

Moving? Move your money first

Cameron Diaz, Gangs of New York

It was meant to be Irish. It wasn’t. In her defence, her co-star Leonardo DiCaprio may have sounded even worse. 2/10

Dick Van Dyke, Mary Poppins AND Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mary Poppins Returns

Love them, didn’t love the accents. Less cocky, more “what on earth is going on here?” While the accents weren’t fabulous, I’m going to be kind in my ranking as the effort was there. And that makes me feel bad. 4/10

Keanu Reeves, Dracula

It pains me to shame Keanu in any way, because what a man. But here we are. He was going for a British accent, and that going got him nowhere. 3/10.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Blood Diamond

Once again, Leo makes an appearance. I hope this doesn’t ruin my future chances with him. It was meant to be a South African. It wasn’t. 3.5/10

Kevin Costner, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

He tried to steal the show with his British accent (get it? Thieves? lol), he did not succeed. 2/10

Brad Pitt, Snatch

Supposedly Irish. 5/10

Pretty much every German accent in Die Hard

I’m German so I can tell you with confidence that we do not sound like that. 1/10

Gerard Butler, The Bounty Hunter

Jennifer Anniston’s great hair was not enough to distract from Gerard Butler’s American accent in this film. 4/10

Michael Caine, On Deadly Ground

This one stings because I love Michael Caine and do not want to diss a legend. 2/10

Their accents may not be international, but your money can be
