Wise study names Berlin top European university city for UK students

Wise

###Today marks the launch of Wise's university city ranking and interactive guide.

Berlin has been named the top European university city for UK students looking to study abroad, closely followed by Paris and Copenhagen. The ranking is based on the factors found to be most important to Y-Gen students, according to Wise research. Beating nine European cities, Berlin was named number one due to free tuition fees (for EU students), cultural activities, vibrant nightlife and value for money.

Paris and Copenhagen, where tuition fees are considerably less than the UK, followed closely behind with ample availability of English-taught degree courses and affordable flights home. Zurich, the city ranked lowest, was let down by pricey tuition fees, costly nightlife and a relatively small international student community.

####Interactive City Guide

We're also launching our Interactive guide for students thinking about European study. Students can discover the city best suited to them, based on the tailored cost and lifestyle factors they consider to be important. The vast majority (87%) of students say the cost of going to university in the UK is too expensive, yet they are unaware of low cost options abroad. Over half of students didn’t know it would be cheaper to study in Europe, and 62% of UK students say they would only consider studying in the UK.

Nilan Peiris, VP Growth at Wise:

“As a British student who studied in Berlin, it’s a shame to see so few British students looking to Europe for their university education. My time spent abroad was priceless: I gained a network of friends around the globe and a greater world perspective._ _Most of all, I learnt to be independent. I loved Germany so much that I stayed well past my graduation.”
