In Mexico, international tourists visiting the state of Quintana Roo are required to pay a tourist tax. This state is home to some of the country’s most popular destinations, such as Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.¹

The Mexico tourist tax, also called Visitax, was introduced in 2021 by the government of Quintana Roo. The tax supports the improvement of local infrastructure, the development of tourism in Mexico, particularly in Quintana Roo, and the protection of the country’s natural environment.¹

Besides Visitax, Mexico’s federal government recently introduced a tax for cruise ship passengers.²

How much is the tourist tax?

The tourist tax in Mexico is currently at $283 MXN per person. The tax is only paid once, either before or when entering the state. You’ll need to pay it regardless of the purpose of your travel, even if you’re visiting for business.¹

The cruise tax will begin at $5 per person, gradually increasing over the next few years. It will rise to $10 in August 2026, then to $15 in July 2027. The final increase is expected in November 2028, when the cruise tax will reach $21.²

How do you pay the tourist tax?

The tourist tax in Mexico can be paid online, on the official Visitax website, or through an authorised third-party platform. You’ll just need to enter the personal details of all passengers, such as your passport numbers and travel dates. You’ll then receive a confirmation email with a QR code, which you’ll present at the airport.¹

Mexico’s cruise tax will be collected on the cruise ship, once per itinerary.²

Tips for travelling to Mexico

Before you leave for Mexico, here are some travel tips you might find useful:

  • Learn some Spanish: A simple ‘Buenos días’ or ‘Gracias’ shows you’re making an effort and appreciating your hosts. At the very least, have a translation app on your phone so you could communicate with locals.
  • Tip: Tipping is very common in Mexico, especially in areas popular with tourists. Try to tip in pesos, but US dollars are generally accepted and appreciated as well.
  • Don’t drink tap water: Make sure to use bottled water even for brushing your teeth.
  • Keep your belongings safe: Petty crime can happen in tourist-heavy areas, so avoid carrying large amounts of cash or wearing flashy jewellery. Pickpockets are common in crowded areas, so stay alert and aware of your surroundings.
