How your favourite fictional students use Wise

Anna Allgaier

I know that the last time you put your feet up with corn of the popped variety, and tuned into your favourite show you thought “I wonder how Wednesday Addams spends her money?” or “Is Regina George a saver?” It’s all logic from this girl.

And since the “back to school” season is upon us, I thought it was due time I gave your Q’s some A’s. So I’ve done some definitely not imaginary research, and uncovered how your favourite fiction students are with money and how they use Wise.

May they inspire you to become a money guru as you step into another year of studying.
Or in my case, years of using spark notes to summarise books I was assigned to, and bringing home “has potential but..” report cards.

WELL LOOK AT ME NOW MR POPPY. Here I am, writing, pressing, powerful, purposeful articles.

I mean…

Here I am, writing articles.

Sigh 🥲

Graduate to smarter spending 🎓

Regina George, Mean Girls

Oh Regina, Regina, Regina. Somebody’s not been very sharp with their money. Miss George doesn’t check her account balance, and she’s been known to be careless with her card in more ways than one, often losing it and only realising it’s gone when she goes to pay for her next Juicy Couture tracksuit. There’s nothing juicy about that financial future though, the bank of Mom and Dad is about to shut.

How she gets Wise

She doesn’t. But she needs to. Regina could benefit from using Wise Jars for her savings. There’s no limit to the amount of Jars you can open in a Wise account, so I’d suggest she goes for “Saving for the future”, “Get in losers, we’re going shopping” and “Swedish nutrition bars.” She may lose her card but she’d never lose her phone, which is why Miss George keeps her card digital in her Apple Wallet.

Rory Gilmore, Gilmore Girls

Rory is a smart cookie. But she also loves a cookie. And cookies cost money. If you’ve tuned into Gilmore Girls, or simply walked into a room while it was on, the first thing you’ll have noticed is that the Gilmore’s are snack queens. They’re also coffee queens and spend half of their time in a cafe drinking hot java.

How she gets Wise

But as mentioned, Rory’s no fool. So she saves for her nibbles with Jars, always making sure there’s cash aside for books, and she avoids sneaky hidden fees by doing what she loves…research. But we make that research easy with our Wise calculator, competitor comparison tool in the calculator, and Wise alert system so she can keep an eye on when exchange rates change. That’s all fabulous, but she basically steals all of her coffee from Luke’s Diner, which is illegal.

Samuel García Domíngue, Elite

He may be young, but Samu ain't dumb. Samuel scored himself a well-deserved spot at Las Encinas High School amongst “the elite”. But the only elite thing I see is his relationship with money. He doesn’t let anything get in his way, makes Bill Gates look unambitious and he knows the value of money and the seriousness of being resourceful.

How he gets Wise

Samuel keeps a close eye on his money with Wise. His transaction notifications always get a read, he budgets, watches over all of his outgoings and his Jars are more organised than books in a library.

Kevin Gnapoor, 'Mean Girls’

“All you sucka MC's ain't got nothin' on me,
From my grades, to my lines, you can't touch Kevin G,
Im a mathlete, the nerd is inferred,
But forget what you heard, I'm like James Bond the third,
Sha-sha shaken, not stirred, I'm Kevin Gnapoor,
The G's silent when I sneak in your door”

The rest of Kevin’s world-famous rap is too riddled with profanities to sit on the Wise website. But if there’s one thing we all took from those five smooth-as-butter lines, it’s that Kevin owns numbers. He’s the king of money maintenance.

How he gets Wise

He works here. Those big, beautiful brains of his get Wise every day.

Troy Bolton, High School Musical

He can bounce a ball, but do his cheques bounce too? Nobody writes cheques anymore, but I can never pass up an opportunity for a bad joke.

Troy’s actually an Irish name dating back to ancient civilization and it translates to “foot soldier.” So it should be no surprise to you that all of Troy's money goes on private dance classes he can’t afford, because he’s in High School. Silly Troy.

How he gets Wise

His saving skills are poor, but at least he’s been crafty and set up a direct debit from his Wise account to his dance instructor so he never misses a payment.

Harry Potter, Harry Potter

Harry was left with a heap of inheritance, which he’s tucked away in savings for a rainy day, in the likely chance that ‘he who shall not be named’ returns .. But people love Harry. Like, really, really love Harry. It’s almost annoying how much people love him. What about Ron? Maybe Ron could use with a self esteem boost once in a while.

How he gets Wise

Anyway, because Harry’s so adored, witches and wizards all over the realm send him large money transfers. And they obviously use Wise, because even the wizarding world can’t abracadabra away hidden fees and Gringott’s crazy transfer costs for bigger batches of money. Travelling from one realm to another can be exhausting, so HP never has his Wise card far away and wingardium leviosa’s it with him everywhere. That way he doesn’t have to think about exchange rates or being charged for money withdrawals.

You can calculate how much his school shopping bits would cost you back in boring muggle world with my currency conversion tool.

Eric Effiong, Sex Education

Eric is 10/10 fabulous and fabulous trickles through all aspects of his life. From his fashion to his friendship to his finances, we all aspire to be just like Eric. He knows how to get thrifty with his fashion while making it look like he’s spent thousands. I applaud you Eric Effiong. I applaud you.

How he gets Wise

Eric know’s the world’s his stage, and the world’s going to know who he is one day. So he gets acquainted with it online and shops hunt down the best deals, ordering clothes from all everywhere from Spain to Maine. Thanks to his cheeky Wise card he can spend online in the currency he’s ordering from. What a treat.

Bella Swan, Twilight

Bella used to have to be frugal with how many Abercrombie & Fitch flannel shirts she purchased, but now she’s not fussed at all because she has a really rich undead boyfriend who can get her anything she wants forever and ever.

Will Smith, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air

He may live with a wealthy family, but Will doesn’t coast. He works hard and keeps his financial fluency fresh. His achilles heel? Splashing out money on lovely ladies. We all have our weaknesses.

How he gets Wise

Will knows the importance of an accessory, and he loves a bit of green. That’s where we come in. He also loves taking his girlfriends away, but as a student with not a lot of income he has to get clever. So he saves, saves, saves.
