The rail network in Germany is reliable and very efficient. The main train company is Deutsche Bahn (DB for short), although Flixtrain is also popular. These companies connect all the major cities in the country, and there are also others that provide international routes, including ÖBB, Eurostar and DB-SNCF.
Germany offers different types of trains and seating classes. For example, Deutsche Bahn’s Intercity-Express (ICE) trains are the fastest option, while Intercity and Eurostar trains are considered semi-fast. In terms of seating, Deutsche Bahn’s Regional trains are in the standard category, while Intercity and ICE trains offer first-class facilities.
Some of the most popular train routes in Germany include Munich to Berlin, Frankfurt to Munich, Berlin to Cologne, and Stuttgart to Berlin. German train operators also run many international services, such as those from Berlin to Amsterdam and from Hamburg to Copenhagen.
Buying tickets well in advance is the best way to save money and secure the best seats for your preferred travel times. In fact, you might even be able to afford a seating upgrade and travel in style. With this in mind, it’s clear that the most efficient way to buy train tickets in Germany is online.
There are two main train ticket types in Germany and which one you pick will depend on your plans and your travel style. The Sparpreis tickets are the best option for budget travellers. They’re cheaper when you book in advance and they don’t allow changes in your booking. Flexpreis tickets are pricier, but they also give you more freedom. They allow you to hop onto any train on your selected day of travel.
The most convenient way to buy train tickets in Germany is through the Trainline app. This is especially useful if you don't speak German, as it ensures you get accurate information. In just a few simple steps, you can book your seat and have peace of mind knowing your travel plans are confirmed. The app also allows you to search all available train companies in Germany in one place.
Let’s go through all the steps and show you how to buy train tickets in Germany with Trainline:
The easiest way to book and access train tickets is through the app, available on both the App Store and Google Play. Alternatively, you can buy your tickets on Trainline’s website using the Journey Planner located at the top of the page.
You should start by selecting your travel destinations and entering the departure and arrival stations. If you’re unsure of the exact station names, you can search by city instead. This step is also a great chance to explore new places to visit and see if you can find more affordable tickets.
Next, provide the usual travel details, such as the number of passengers and travel dates. If you're not ready to purchase a return ticket yet, you can simply select your departure date.
Additionally, if you have any railcards or loyalty cards that offer discounts, be sure to enter that information at this stage. If you're planning to rely on trains as your primary way of getting around during your holiday, you might want to consider the German BahnCard.
After tapping ‘Find times and prices,’ you'll see the search results based on the information you've provided. From there, you can select your desired train time and ticket class and then proceed to choose your seat.
If you're booking through the Trainline website, you'll need to provide an email address where your ticket confirmation will be sent. However, if you're using the app, you'll only need to enter the names of all passengers. Be sure the names match those on your IDs to avoid any complications.
After entering your details, you'll be taken to the checkout page. Double-check the dates, prices and passenger names to make sure everything is correct. Once you're happy with everything, go ahead and book your tickets.
There are various ways to check how much train tickets cost. If you're already in Germany, you can head to the nearest train station and ask about the route you're interested in. However, this is best if you already know your travel dates, rather than just browsing fares.
Another option is to visit the website of the train operator you've chosen to travel with. Enter your route and travel dates to check the prices and be sure to pay attention to whether you're looking at the Sparpreis or Flexpreis fare. Sparpreis can be up to 85% cheaper! While this is a valid option, it does limit you to just one train company.
Perhaps the most convenient way to search for fares is through the Trainline app. You can view multiple operators at once, without the need to visit each website individually. This might even help you find a cheaper option for your trip, since Trainline will display any available discounts.²
The Trainline app provides train timetable information, including real-time updates. Simply enter your travel details, and you'll receive the schedule. You can even view train schedules in advance.
Let’s go over the ticket purchase process once again:
