El Clásico - Which team wins with Spaniards in the U.S.

Wise

Ahead of this week's El Clásico, we thought we'd do a bit of investigative work to understand how the rivalry between F.C. Barcelona and Real Madrid C.F. breaks down this side of the Atlantic.

It's a pretty intense and close-run competition, especially amongst Spanish expats living in the U.S.

Amongst people who've relocated from Spain to the U.S. - and the U.S. Census tells us that there are about 100,000 of them - Barcelona is the more popular, but only just. We looked at social media likes and dislikes of Spaniards living in the U.S. and found that 9,500 - around 9.2% - are Barça fans, with 9,100 - around 8.8% - supporting Los Merengues.

Amongst everyone living in the US, it wasn't even close to being a contest, however. Around 12.5 million follow Barcelona on social media, vs. 9.5 million following Madrid. A level of dominance consistent with their performance this season, including the last Clásico, 4-0.

There's some good news for Real Madrid fans, though. Cristiano Ronaldo is the most popular La Liga player amongst Spanish expats in the U.S. with 26,000 followers/likes. That compares to 20,000 for the mighty Lionel Messi and 16,000 for Neymar Jr.
