Dental implants in Hungary: Prices and top clinics

Zorica Lončar

If you’re considering getting dental implants, you might be looking abroad for treatment.

One of the most popular choices for dental tourism is Hungary. The country offers high quality dental treatment at affordable prices, and it tends to be much cheaper than here in the UK - where implants generally aren’t available on the NHS.

But how much can you expect to pay for dental implants in Hungary, and which clinic should you choose? In this guide, we’ll compare Hungary dentist prices and give you an overview of the top clinics.

We’ll also look at some of the most important things to consider before booking your treatment. One of these is how you’ll get your money over to Hungary to cover the cost of your treatment, accommodation and other expenses.

Using your bank to send GBP to Hungary can be expensive, but you’ll pay only low fees and get the real, mid-market exchange rate when you open a Wise multi-currency account.

But more on this later. Let’s start by looking at why Hungary is such a popular choice for dental tourism.

Why choose Hungary for dental implants?

There are two main reasons people from the UK travel to Hungary for dental treatment - price and the quality of treatment.

Price of dental treatment in Hungary

The low cost of dental care in Hungary makes it very attractive to ‘dental tourists’. With treatments like dental implants not readily available on the NHS, the only option if you have a missing tooth is to pay for private treatment.

Full mouth dental implants in a private clinic in the UK can cost around £10,000 to £40,000. In Hungary, the average cost is half as much, at around £5,000 to £20,000¹.

For a single tooth implant, the cost is up to £2,900 in the UK and just £1,100 in Hungary¹.

Education and certification of dentists in Hungary¹

As well as the cost, Hungary also has a reputation for dental excellence. The industry is well regulated and conforms to high EU standards. All dentists are highly educated and must register with the Ministry of Health to receive certification. To keep their licence, dentists must then undergo further education to keep up with current dental standards.

Speed of treatment and state-of-the-art facilities

Compared to NHS waiting times, the speed of dental treatment in Hungary is super fast - you can potentially have your procedure carried out in a matter of days. If you’re stuck with a missing tooth, it’s easy to see how this can be very appealing.

Hungarian dentist clinics are also known for their excellent facilities, which use the latest technology and place a strong emphasis on providing exceptional customer care. You may even find that some clinics have a ‘spa-like’ feel.

Things to consider before getting dental implants in Hungary

Heading overseas for medical care or dental treatment is a pretty big deal. There’s lots to think about, from costs to potential risks. This is why it’s always important to do your homework, taking extra time to research each clinic thoroughly. Here are just a few of the most crucial things to think about:

  • The reputation, reviews and accreditation of each dental clinic - including whether they have ISO 9001 certification. This is international recognition of quality management systems, so it isn’t absolutely crucial to have but it can offer peace of mind when choosing a clinic.

  • Dentist training and qualifications. Is the dentist a specialist in dental implants?

  • Where to have treatment. Most UK patients head to Budapest, where the largest concentration of dental clinics can be found. Budapest is also very easy to reach by plane from the UK. However, it isn’t the only place to access affordable dental implant treatment. Another dental tourism hotspot in Hungary is the northwestern town of Mosonmagyaróvár, where prices can be a little lower.

  • Language. Does the clinic have fluent English-speaking staff? This could be important when understanding the procedure and your treatment plan.

  • Planning for aftercare. What kind of aftercare package is available from the dental clinic, if any? Will you be looked after or need to make your own arrangements?

  • Travel arrangements and where to stay. Getting dental treatment overseas isn’t just about booking the procedure. You also need to plan how you’ll travel there, including to and from the clinic. Where will you stay, and do you need anyone to go with you? Some Hungarian dental clinics will have a dedicated travel department to help you make these arrangements, and may even offer free transport or accommodation as part of the package.

  • Insurance. You’re likely to need medical insurance before getting dental implants in Hungary.

  • Overall costs compared to the UK. Once you’ve added up all your costs, including accommodation, transport and living expenses for the duration of your trip, is it still just as cost-effective to head to Hungary for dental treatment?
