The Big Mac Index - the cost of Big Macs around the world

Anna Allgaier

At Wise we have an SEO team. What they do is they write articles with keywords in them so you can find them more easily on Google. They’re lovely like that.

Translation: They identify questions that you ask Google frequently so that we, at Wise, can answer them. Now you have some context, here’s a conversation I had with a member of our SEO team recently:

Me: “Hey, found any keywords I could write an article on recently?”

SEO genius: “As a matter of fact Anna, yes. People are always looking for the most affordable places in the world to buy a Mac computer.”

Me: “You don’t say?”

….

Me: “I’m going to write about McDonalds.

P.S The information you're about to read was originally pushed out into the big, beautiful world by The Economist and other burger loving sources. Prices change, so these figures may have changed too. I'll get to updating them.

How much is a Big Mac?

For the purpose of this article, I’ll be comparing the prices of Big Macs around the world to what we pay for one here in the UK. That’s £3.69. The Big Mac, in my opinion, is the ultimate burger. It doesn’t quite trump their Apple Pie though.

Now that I'm done being a food critic, let us proceed with this very important article, that will greatly contribute to your life and the bank of knowledge you hold within your noggin.

Where is the cheapest Big Mac in the world?

The cheapest Big Mac in the world can be purchased in Venezuela for an average cost of £1.43. Your flights there will be pricier than that, but you can just take full advantage of the burger bliss once you get there. Worth it.

Where is the most expensive Big Mac in the world?

What’s got mountains, fondue and a Big Mac so pricey you’ll cry?

Switzerland. It’s Switzerland.

If you want to go on a meaty McDonald’s journey of joy here, you’ll need £5.90. Calm down Switzerland. Jeez. That’s £2.11 more expensive than what we pay here in the UK.

I expect these findings to determine your next holiday destination, so have ranked the results by most to least expensive.
