If you have a Metro Bank account but are thinking of switching banks, you’ll need to know how to close your account.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to close an account with Metro Bank. There are a few different ways to do it, some quicker and easier than others. We’ll also cover things to consider before you get started.

And if you’re looking for an alternative to a traditional bank once you leave Metro Bank, we’ll show you a brilliant alternative - the Wise multi-currency account.

But for now, let’s focus on getting that bank account closed for you.

How to close an account with Metro Bank - your options

You can close your account with Metro Bank in one of three ways - in branch, by phone or by post. Here’s the essential info you need to know about each.

In branch

If you prefer to speak to someone in person about closing your account, you can visit a Metro Bank branch. You can find your nearest store here, along with opening hours.

You shouldn’t need an appointment, so you can just pop in whenever suits your schedule. Branches are open 7 days a week, 362 days a year¹. Take your account details in with you, along with your debit card just in case you’re asked for it.

By phone

Alternatively, you can call up Metro Bank customer services to close your account. The number you need for the bank’s UK contact centre is 0345 08 08 500¹.

By post

Prefer to send a letter to close your account? Bear in mind that this method will inevitably be a little slower, but this is a good option for those who’d prefer their request to be sent in writing.

The address to write to is¹:

Metro Bank, One Southampton Row, London, WC1B 5HA.

Make sure to include all relevant account details in your letter.

Can I close a Metro Bank account online?

Metro Bank doesn’t appear to offer the option to close a bank account online, although it’s always worth checking your online banking just in case. Otherwise, you’ll need to go through one of the methods listed above.

Is there any charge to close a Metro Bank account?

There are no charges relating to closing down an account on Metro Bank’s list of fees and conditions for current accounts. If you have any concerns though, you can always call up customer services to make an enquiry.

Things to consider before closing your Metro Bank account

Before you go ahead and close your account, there are a handful of important things to check. For example¹:

  • That your account isn’t overdrawn - if your account has a negative balance, you won’t be able to close it until you’ve paid back the overdraft.
  • That you’ve paid all charges and pending transactions.
  • That you’ve chosen a nominated account for any credit or credit interest to be transferred to. You can also opt to withdraw the amount if you prefer.

You might also want to download a copy of your transaction history before you lose access to online banking.

Alternatively, you can request this in branch or call up Metro Bank on 0345 08 08 508. You’ll then receive a printed version by post within around 7 working days. The bank can provide you with a transaction history going back 5 years¹.
