Just opened a Chase account and received your new debit card? You’ll need to know what you can do with it, including making cash withdrawals.
In this handy guide, we’ll give you the lowdown on Chase ATM withdrawals.
We’ll cover limits (how much you can withdraw at once or per day) along with fees for withdrawing cash in the UK and overseas. Plus, info on what exchange rate will be used when you use an overseas ATM with your Chase card.
We’ll even show you an alternative option - the Wise card, which lets you withdraw up to £200 a month fee-free all over the world. You’ll just need to watch out for ATM operator fees.
But more on this later. For now, let’s focus on ATM withdrawals with the Chase card.
Learn more about the Wise card 💳
Like with many providers, Chase does have some limits on how much cash you can take out with its debit cards.
Personal customers can withdraw a maximum of £500 a day with a Chase card.¹ This limit applies whether you’re in the UK or using an ATM in another country.
But if you’re travelling or on holiday, there’s a monthly ATM withdrawal limit you need to know about. According to Chase, you’ll only be able to withdraw a maximum of £1,500 a month from overseas ATMs.¹
So, you’ll need to factor this in if you’re going on a long trip and may need access to more cash than this. It could be worth changing currency before you travel, or taking an alternative payment method with you - such as another card.
Now for the all-important question - does Chase charge any fees for taking out cash with its cards?
The great news is that it doesn’t. There are no fees for withdrawing cash at an ATM using a Chase card in the UK.¹
You can even withdraw cash overseas without any fees from Chase, although bear in mind that some ATM operators may have their own charges.
If you’re travelling in the US, you’ll be able to use Chase’s ATMs without any operator or transaction fees.¹
As well as checking whether there are fees for overseas cash withdrawals, you’ll also need to know what exchange rate will be used to convert currency. For example, for converting GBP to EUR if you’re withdrawing cash from an ATM in France or another euro-using country.
Chase uses the Mastercard exchange rate for overseas transactions on its cards.¹ You can check this at any time here on the Mastercard website.
If prompted at the ATM, you should always choose the local currency for the transaction. This will mean that the Mastercard exchange rate will be used.
If you choose for it to be carried out in your home currency (GBP) instead, then the ATM will select its own exchange rate - and this is likely to be unfavourable for you.
Love to travel? The Wise card could be your perfect travel companion.
