MoneyGram transfer fees and charges

MoneyGram doesn't publish one flat fee.

The cost depends on several parts of your transfer, such as where you're sending, how much you send, how you pay, and how your recipient collects the money.²

As a general rule, paying from a US checking account tends to come with the lowest fee. Paying with a debit or credit card is slightly higher. If you use a credit card, your card issuer may also add a cash advance fee and interest on top of MoneyGram's charge.²

The easiest way to know your cost is to use the fee estimator on MoneyGram's website or app.

MoneyGram exchange rate

When you send money in another currency, MoneyGram converts it using its own exchange rate.

MoneyGram advertises its exchange rates as a "great" exchange rate, but that means it adds a markup, and the rate you get is usually a little weaker than the mid-market rate, the midpoint you can look up on Google or a currency converter.¹

MoneyGram doesn't publish how large their margin is, so a portion of your total cost stays hidden inside the rate.

How do you make a wire transfer with MoneyGram?

Here's how you can send a MoneyGram transfer:

  1. Register for a MoneyGram account or log in at moneygram.com or in the app
  2. Choose your recipient's country and how they will receive the money
  3. Enter the amount you want to send
  4. Review the fee and exchange rate
  5. Add your recipient's details, such as their name and bank or wallet information
  6. Choose how you want to pay, using a bank account, debit card, or credit card
  7. Review everything and confirm your transfer
  8. Save your reference number so you and your recipient can track the transfer

After you confirm, MoneyGram processes the payment, and you can follow its progress in the app or online.

What is the wire transfer limit for MoneyGram?

MoneyGram sets limits on how much you can send.

On the main website, MoneyGram says that limits vary based on your payment method, send country, receive country, and receive method, and that daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly caps apply for your protection.³

To see your own limits, you'll need to log in and start a transfer.

At the same time, the Walmart powered by MoneyGram help pages state that for most countries you can send up to 10,000 USD per online transfer, and up to 10,000 USD every 30 calendar days.⁴

Because the published numbers differ between MoneyGram's channels, make sure to check the limit in your account before you plan a larger transfer.

How long does a MoneyGram transfer take?

For timing, there's no single timeline.

It depends on where you're sending money, how you pay, and how your recipient collects the money. MoneyGram will show you an estimated delivery time as you're setting up your transfer.

That said, here's what you can generally expect:⁵

  • Cash pickup is usually ready in about 10 minutes, subject to agent hours
  • Transfers to an eligible debit card typically arrive within minutes
  • Mobile wallet transfers usually take a few minutes
  • Transfers to a bank account typically arrive within 3 business days
  • Home delivery, where available, usually takes up to 3 business days

Keep in mind that paying by bank transfer can add 1 to 5 business days for the payment to process. Incorrect recipient details, extra identity checks, and local banking holidays can also slow a transfer down, so make sure you get accurate information.⁵

MoneyGram contact information

If you need help with a transfer, MoneyGram has a help center where you can search answers or find an agent location near you. There is also a contact form on the help center if you would rather reach out.

Once you have an account, you should also be able to use in-app support.

MoneyGram gives you wide reach and flexible options, with transfers to more than 200 countries, several ways to pay, and delivery methods from cash pickup to bank deposit.¹

However, MoneyGram doesn't clearly spell out its exchange rate margin, and it can add significant cost to your transfer.

If clear pricing is your priority, consider comparing MoneyGram against Wise.
