What is Remitly?

Remitly is a remittance company that allows you to send money to family and friends in another country. You can set up your transfer through the app or the website, and Remitly can reach over 175 countries.²

Remitly says more than 90% of funded transfers are delivered in under an hour, with many completing in seconds. However, some transfers take longer depending on the payment method and delivery option you choose.²

How does Remitly work?

Remitly allows you to send money across borders in a few different ways:³

  • Bank deposit: Send the money to your recipient's bank account
  • Cash pickup: Let your recipient collect cash at a partner location near them
  • Mobile wallet: Deposit the money into your recipient's mobile money account
  • Home delivery: Send cash to your recipient's door in select countries (Dominican Republic, Philippines, and Vietnam)

You can fund your transfer through your bank account, debit or credit card, and Apple Pay or Google Pay in the US.²

As you're setting up the transfer, Remitly will display the fee, exchange rate, and estimated arrival time. In many corridors, you can also choose between a quicker Express option and a lower-cost Economy one, depending on your goals.²

How to track your Remitly transfer

Once a transfer is on its way, every transaction gets a one-of-a-kind reference number. That number is your key to identifying your Remitly transfer. You can follow a transfer from the Remitly app, on the website, or through the updates Remitly sends you.

Let's take a closer look at how you can track your transfer with Remitly.¹

Check your status in the app

Sign in to the Remitly app and look at the Home tab, where your most recent transfers appear. Tap a transfer to open its details, including the reference number and the status of the transfer.

To see older transfers, select View all.

Check your status on Remitly.com

Sign in to your Remitly account on the website and open Transfer history from the menu. You can scroll through everything you've sent and filter by whether a transfer is in progress or already delivered.

Watch for messages from Remitly

Remitly emails, texts, or sends an app notification when your transfer status changes. Every message includes the reference number.

Finding your reference number

If you're the one sending the transfer, the reference number is at the top of the transfer details page, just after your recipient's name. If you're receiving, the reference number arrives in a text message from Remitly, or you can ask your sender to give it to you.¹

For a cash pickup, your recipient needs the reference number to collect the money, so make sure they have it before they head to the pickup location.

Understanding what your transfer status means

Your status changes as the transfer moves along. Here's what the different transfer statuses mean:¹

  • In Progress: Everything is on track to arrive by the promised delivery date
  • In Review: Remitly is checking the transfer against regulations and its user agreement, and will reach out if it needs anything from you
  • On Hold: Remitly needs your help, usually to fix a detail or verify your identity, before it can continue
  • Ready for Pickup: The money is waiting for your recipient to collect at their cash pickup location
  • Delivered: The money has reached your recipient
  • Canceled: The transfer can't go through, and you'll be refunded if you were charged

A review doesn't necessarily mean that something is wrong.

Remitly runs these checks to meet financial regulations, and a few common situations tend to trigger them, such as sending a larger amount than usual, making your first transfer, paying a new recipient, or needing to confirm your identity.

If Remitly needs more information from you, the support team will reach out by phone, email, or text.

Is it safe to transfer money with Remitly?

Remitly is a licensed, regulated money transmitter. It's generally safe to use.

It encrypts your data with bank-level technology, asks for two-factor authentication when you sign in, and runs fraud monitoring that watches for unusual activity.⁴

The biggest risk with Remitly is a scam, or when someone tricks you into sending money to a person you don't actually know. This is because a completed transfer is difficult or often impossible to reverse, so once you send your money, it’s practically gone.

The best way to protect yourself from a scam is to only send money to people you know and ignore anyone who pressures you to pay fast for a prize, an emergency, or a deal that sounds too good to be true.

You should also report anything suspicious to Remitly straight away if you think you have been targeted or your account was used without permission.
