How does wiring money through Walmart work?

Walmart has two main wire transfer services. Walmart2Walmart is in partnership with Ria for domestic payments within the US, including Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Walmart2World is its international payments service in partnership with MoneyGram.

As of 2021, Walmart has partnered with Western Union on Walmart2World service as well, although Western Union still has its own transfer service.

For international transfers, you can choose to send money for cash pickup, or directly to the recipient’s bank account, debit card, or mobile wallet - the available services will vary depending on the destination country.

If you want to transfer money with Walmart online, you’ll be redirected to the MoneyGram and Walmart partner website. You can also request wire transfers in person - visit their website to search for your nearest Walmart location.

💡 If wire transfers don’t work for you, Walmart offers a money order service as well, as does MoneyGram.

How to wire money online with Walmart

The first thing to note is that both you and the recipient will need photo ID (for example, a driver’s license or passport) to send and receive money through Walmart. Here’s how the process works:

1. Register for an account, or log into your account

If you haven’t used the Walmart service before, you’ll be asked to enter your information, such as your full name (as shown on your ID) and home address.

2. Select a recipient

You’ll then need to enter the recipient’s information, including their first name, last name, the country and state or province they live in.

3. Fund the transfer

The next step prompts you to choose how your recipient will receive the funds. The most common method is a cash pickup, which is typically available within just a few minutes. On the next screen, you’ll input how much money you want to wire.

4. Transfer the money

Pressing the “Get total” button will reveal the various ways you can pay for this transfer, which includes by bank account, debit or credit card. The transfer fee will then be displayed, along with the total cost to send your money. The final step is to verify your identity by inputting additional personal information. You’ll then confirm the details of your wire, and transfer the funds.

How much does it cost to wire money at Walmart?

The cost of wiring money with Walmart varies depending on whether you’re making a domestic or international payment, mainly because Walmart is partnered with multiple services.

For online transfers, you can use their website to estimate the exact fees. Generally, Walmart2World’s transfer fees are as follows¹:

  • $4 for transfers of $50 or less
  • $8 for transfers of $51-1,000
  • $16 for transfers of $1,001-2,500

Exchange rates will then be added to that amount to get your final total.

💡 It’s worth mentioning that fees are higher if you’re paying by credit or debit card. Your credit card company may also charge you processing fees and interest if you don’t pay the balance in full.

Can I pick up Walmart2Walmart money online?

Walmart2Walmart, powered by Ria, is used for transfers within the United States, inclusive of Mexico and Puerto Rico.

One of the biggest advantages of this service is that it’s available if you need to send money to someone who doesn’t have a bank account.
