Revolut to GCash transfers

First things first: is Revolut available in the Philippines?

Unfortunately at the time of research, Revolut Philippines is not yet available. Where we’ve looked at Revolut plans, costs or features in this guide, we’ve used Revolut Singapore2 as an example - but the features and fees associated with Revolut accounts in different countries can vary. You’ll need to ask the person sending you money to check the fees for their location carefully before they arrange any payment.

OK, so what about Revolut to GCash transfers? Is it possible to move money directly from Revolut to GCash?

As we’ve seen the features of a Revolut account can vary based on where the sender is based. However, at the time of writing, it’s not possible to send money from Revolut to GCash directly for the sample Revolut locations we looked at - Singapore, the US and Australia. This feature is listed as ‘coming soon’ though, so it’s well worth looking out for this coming online at some point in future.

So, if you can’t send money from Revolut to GCash directly, what are the alternatives? In most cases you’ll need to use a third party - which could involve:

  • Having the person sending you money withdraw the funds from Revolut to their own bank, and then send the GCash payment from a bank
  • Having the person sending you money transfer from Revolut to your bank in the Philippines, so you can add the money to GCash yourself

While these aren’t perfect solutions, they would ultimately get your money to where you want it - in your GCash account and ready for use.

Eligibility to receive money from Revolut to GCash

You can receive a payment to Revolut in several different ways. To have the most flexibility in your GCash account, and to increase your wallet limits, it’s worth getting your account verified3. This gives your wallet balance limit a boost from 5,000 PHP to 100,000 PHP or more, making it easier to use your GCash account day to day.

The GCash verification process is extremely straightforward and just involves you adding a couple of documents including a photo of your proof of ID4.

What details are needed to receive a transfer from Revolut to GCash?

If your sender has found a way to process their payment to arrive in your GCash account - by withdrawing their money from Revolut to a bank, and sending to GCash from there, for example - all you need to give them is your name and GCash phone number. They will be able to initiate the deposit to GCash based on this information.

If the sender decides to transfer the money from Revolut to your bank in the Philippines, you will need to give them all of your bank details. This will normally include:

  • Your name as shown on your account
  • Your account number
  • Your bank’s name
  • Your bank's SWIFT/BIC code

It’s important to note here that there are likely to be fees involved in the payment process in this case. The sender is likely to pay a fee to send the money to your bank in the Philippines, and then there may also be a charge involved in the exchange rate (we’ll look at that more closely later). Finally, third party banks which are involved in processing the payment might also charge fees, which are deducted from the amount as it’s transferred.

How to receive money from Revolut to GCash: Step-by-step guide

There’s not presently a way to directly send money from Revolut to GCash. This means you’ll need to find a workaround which suits both you and the person sending you money. Most likely this will require the sender to withdraw their money from Revolut to their bank, and then send to GCash from there - or they’ll have to send the money to your bank in the Philippines for you to move to GCash yourself.

If the sender will withdraw the funds and move it to their bank, you can simply give them your GCash name and number, and wait for the money to arrive. Once the withdrawal from Revolut is processed, the sender can process the GCash payment which may arrive pretty quickly to your GCash wallet.

On the other hand if the sender is going to move the money to your bank in the Philippines, it’ll be on you to then transfer to GCash. This can be done most easily by using the GCash Cash in function. Here’s how to add money to GCash from a bank in the Philippines5:

  1. Log into your GCash account and navigate to Cash in
  2. Pick your bank from the list provided
  3. Enter the amount to cash in and click on the account you want to pay from
  4. Enter the 6-digit OTP sent to your registered mobile number

As we've mentioned, there may end up being a few fees involved, which can vary depending on which way round you want the process to work. If the sender is going to transfer your money from overseas to your bank in the Philippines, it’s worth having them shop around for the best available exchange rate and transfer fee to make sure you get as much as possible in the end. We’ll look at one good option for low cost international money transfers - Wise - later.

What else do I need to know when receiving money from Revolut to GCash

It’s well worth keeping an eye out to see when the Revolut to GCash payment process is up and running. It’s in the works and is listed as coming soon on the Revolut local websites we visited - but for the moment unfortunately there’s no simple way to get your money from Revolut to GCash. Here are another few things to think about.

How long does a Revolut to GCash transfer take?

The transfer time for moving money from Revolut to GCash can vary a lot. If your sender is going to transfer the money from Revolut or their bank, to your bank in the Philippines this could take 1 - 5 days depending on where in the world the sender is and the bank they use. Once you have your money in PHP it’s very simple - and often instant - to add the money to GCash yourself.

Revolut to GCash transfer fee

As we've mentioned, there could be a few possible fees to watch out for when moving money from Revolut to GCash using a third party. Let’s look at a couple of scenarios:

  1. The sender withdraws the money from Revolut to their bank, and then sends the payment to GCash from their bank using the GCash Cash in via international banks feature.

In this case, the sender may pay a fee to Revolut to send the money to their local bank overseas. This will depend on the Revolut account type they have. There is then likely to be a fee to pay to GCash and the bank for processing the transfer, and the exchange rate used to convert the funds from the foreign currency to PHP will also include a fee.

  1. The sender transfers the money from Revolut or their bank to your bank in the Philippines, and you then Cash in vis a local banking partner on the GCash app

In this case, there’s likely to be a fee when converting the currency to PHP, as well as a transfer fee to move the money from overseas to your Philippine bank account. The transfer fee could vary a lot depending on the way the sender arranges the payment, and may also involve third party costs which are deducted as the payment is processed. You can add your money to GCash through your local bank using Instapay, which is usually pretty cheap with fees averaging at about 25 PHP.

Revolut exchange rate to GCash for foreign currency transfers

At some point in the process of moving money from overseas to your GCash account, there will need to be currency conversion. Here the exchange rate can make a huge difference to the amount you get in your GCash account in the end.

Generally, banks and many international money transfer services will add a markup to the exchange rate they use to convert currencies. This is a fee but it’s hard to spot because it’s just added to the rate you’re quoted. Markups vary - but if the markup is high you may get less than you expect. And on a higher value payment, the absolute amount you pay can end up being very high indeed.

Compare the exchange rate available from Revolut, from the sender’s bank or from your own bank or GCash account, to see which looks best. You may also want to look at alternatives, such as Wise, which allow you to transfer money globally with the mid-market rate with no markup added.

Is Revolut available in the Philippines?

No. Revolut is not available to residents in the Philippines at the time of writing. Keep an eye out for Revolut Philippines, in case the service rolls out locally in the future.
