Can you set up recurring payments on Venmo?

Currently, the platform does not offer the option to set up recurring Venmo payments(See Venmo Alternatives).³ But that’s not to say they won’t implement this feature in the future. If you have regular payments such as rent, utilities, or subscriptions, you won't find an option to pay those as Venmo monthly payments. So, any constant transfers would need you to manually process them each time around.

Can you set up automatic payments on Venmo?

As you aren’t able to set up recurring Venmo requests, Venmo automatic payments aren’t available either within their platform. The platform won’t be able to auto-charge your Venmo account, which means having to do it yourself and remembering not to miss the deadline.

Can you schedule payments on Venmo?

So, we’ve concluded that there aren’t automatic or recurring payments on Venmo, but what about scheduled payments? Unfortunately, Venmo doesn’t have this feature either. If you want to organize your payments in advance – for example, to make sure your house cleaner gets paid on the first of every month – Venmo won’t be able to help. In this case, you’d have to head onto the app and input all the details manually every 30 days.

Venmo payment specifics: Limits, requests, and more

While Venmo doesn’t have automatic, recurring, or scheduled payment features, what it does excel at is letting people send and receive money quickly and painlessly. But once you’ve set up your account, you might be wondering how much you can send, how payment requests work, and more. We’ll dive into the specifics of Venmo payments so your experience goes smoothly.

What is the max payment you can send on Venmo?

When it comes to the max payment on Venmo you can send, payments work on a tiered system.² Transaction limits, in general, run on a weekly rolling basis, so each user gets a maximum payment amount for the week. If you’ve just joined and haven’t completed identity verification, your weekly spending limit caps at $299.99 – which includes peer-to-peer Venmo transactions and merchant payments.

Once you’ve fully verified your identity with Venmo, that limit shoots up, and it becomes possible to get a weekly limit of $60,000.²

How do I know if my Venmo payment went through?

The platform makes it easy to check whether your payment went through or not. After completing a transaction, Venmo will automatically send you an instant notification that shows you the payment status. If you didn’t get a Venmo notification or want more details, you can go to your Transaction History using the menu.

From the sender’s side, the payment will be in red paired with a minus sign (-$20), while the recipient will see an amount in green.³

The interesting thing about the platform is that each user can decide who can see their Venmo transactions – with the payment amount always kept a secret. They can be Public (seen by everyone on the app or internet), Friends (visible to the sender, recipient, and their friends), or Private (visible to the recipient and sender). So, if you see your name most recently on their list, it’s likely your transaction was successful.³

Keep in mind that the recipient you’re sending money to also needs to have a Venmo account for the transaction to be successful. If you send a payment to an email address or phone number that isn’t associated with an active Venmo account or one that isn’t verified, they’ll have to verify themselves before the payment goes through.³

How to accept a Venmo payment

Receiving Venmo payments doesn’t require any further action if you’re happy keeping the money in your Venmo account. When you log in to your account through the website or Venmo app, you’ll see a statement that tells you the payment was received. This means the payment was made to you and put into your Venmo account.

Does Venmo notify you when someone sends you money?

Venmo will always send you an in-app notification to let you know that you’ve received money. You also have the option to turn on push, text, or email notifications.

When does a Venmo payment go through?

Sending a Venmo payment happens almost instantly, but if you’re looking to transfer your money to a bank, a standard transfer typically takes 1 to 3 business days (unless you pay a small fee to get it done instantly). If you’re eligible for instant transfers, you can send money to an eligible U.S. bank account or Visa/Mastercard debit card within 30 minutes.⁴

What info do I give someone to pay me on Venmo?

There are options when requesting money on Venmo. You can either give out your Venmo username or the email or phone number associated with your Venmo account. Alternatively, you can provide your Venmo scan code via text or email.

Venmo recommends only sending money to people you know. The platform is primarily made for peer-to-peer transactions, as it doesn’t provide a buyer or seller protection program for transactions made through the Venmo app or site. In certain instances, your Authorized Merchant Payments and Venmo Debit Card transactions might be eligible for protection under the Venmo Purchase Program.⁵ ⁶

Purchases eligible for the Venmo Purchase Program have to have been made on an authorized merchant’s app or mobile site using Venmo or if the Venmo Debit Card was used to make a transaction. For these purchases, Venmo covers you for the full amount of the item and shipping costs if you don’t receive it or receive a very different item than what was described (i.e., a healthy plant was pictured, but you received a dying one).⁵ ⁶

How do I know if someone received my Venmo payment?

Venmo will typically send you a notification to let you know the transaction is successful, and the payment will be shown in red with a minus sign in your account to indicate the money was sent. If the recipient’s transactions are public, you can also head over to their profile and see if they’ve received it.

How to request payment on Venmo

Requesting a Venmo payment is simple. All you have to do is tap “Request” at the bottom of the screen, select the person or people you want to request money from, enter an amount, and add a note. You can even request money from multiple people if, for instance, you’ve all gone out for a nice brunch and need to split the costs.⁷

In this case, you’ll need to add all the recipients and enter the amount of money you’re requesting from each person and a payment note.⁷

How to see pending Venmo requests

As you’ll, no doubt, want to make sure you’re on top of your finances, Venmo allows you to see all your pending requests. Simply click on your profile, scroll down, and you’ll see an icon where you can select from pending payments or requests.

How long do Venmo requests last?

It’s unclear how long Venmo requests last and when exactly they expire. The good news is if you feel like someone is ghosting your request or have just forgotten about it, there’s the option to send a reminder notification. The notification will tell the other party that they owe x amount of money and that they need to pay up.

How long does it take to receive a Venmo payment?

Once someone sends you a Venmo payment, you’ll receive it almost instantaneously. If you want to transfer the money to your bank account, you need to make sure that your bank account is linked to your Venmo account and has been verified. Once that’s complete, app users can head over to the “Me” tab and tap “Add or Transfer” under Wallet. Then, fill out the details and tap “Transfer.” ⁸

Having your money transferred to a bank account can be “Instant” (which comes at a small fee) or take “1 - 3 Biz Days” (for no fee).⁸

Can you track Venmo payments?

Because Venmo payments happen instantly, there isn’t an option to track your payments. However, you’ll always be able to see your full transaction history – who you’ve paid, how much, and whether there were any notes attached to it. This gives you a full view of your trail of payments so you can refer back if needed.
