Can I make an international wire transfer with First Republic?

Yes. First Republic is now part of Chase, and if you're a Chase customer, you can send international wire transfers to over 90 countries in multiple currencies.¹

These transfers happen through the SWIFT network, which connects thousands of banks through a secure messaging system. When you send funds from the US to another country, SWIFT creates protected pathways between banks so that your money reaches its destination safely.

You can make an international wire transfer in USD or foreign currency. Sending money in USD might feel more straightforward, but it often triggers conversion fees at the receiving bank.

Sending in the recipient's local currency can be more cost-effective, but Chase will still charge its own conversion fee upfront.

First Republic (Chase) international wire transfer fee

Chase will most likely charge you a fee to send your international wire.

Premium accounts like Chase Sapphire might qualify for reduced or waived wire transfer fees, but here's what most standard accounts can expect to pay.

Transfer methodFee²
Banker-assisted (USD or foreign currency)50 USD
Online/mobile app (USD)40 USD
Online/mobile app (foreign currency)5 USD
Online/mobile app (foreign currency and the amount is equal to 5,000 USD or more)0 USD

When receiving international wire transfers, you'll pay 15 USD per transfer. This fee will be waived if the transfer was originally sent through Chase, either with a banker's help or through their website or mobile app.²

Keep in mind that other banks might take a cut along the way, too. When your money travels through the SWIFT network, intermediary banks often charge their own fees, which can reduce the final amount your recipient gets.

First Republic (Chase) exchange rates

You often need to convert from USD into a foreign currency when making an international wire transfer. For example, you would need to convert from USD to EUR to send money to Italy.

Exchange rates determine how much money you'll get when switching from one currency to another. Banks typically use a different rate from the mid-market exchange rate (the rate you see on Google). They make it less favorable to profit from the transaction.

For example, if the mid-market rate is 1 USD = 0.85 EUR, a bank might offer you 0.82 EUR instead and keep the difference. So, currency exchange can feel like a hidden fee that many people don't expect.

When you send money internationally, your transfer might pass through several banks before reaching its destination. Each intermediary bank can convert the money at their own - usually not favorable - rates. This means if you send 1,000 USD to someone in Italy, they might receive fewer euros than you expected.

With Chase, there's some transparency in this process. When sending a foreign currency wire, you'll see the exact exchange rate before confirming your transfer. This rate is guaranteed for 30 minutes, with a countdown timer showing how long until the rate refreshes.³
