What is Tokopedia?

Tokopedia is a well loved and pretty huge Indonesian ecommerce company - and part of the same business as Gojek following a recent merger.

Tokopedia is a marketplace site, connecting merchants directly with customers, to buy pretty much anything you can think of. Millions of merchants are on Tokopedia, which means you can find a broad array of goods - and which can also mean that prices are low, thanks to intense competition between sellers.

As with any marketplace you’ll need to shop around and make sure you’re buying from a seller who has good customer feedback, to ensure the quality of goods is what you’d expect. But with the normal precautions you’d have in place for any marketplace site, Tokopedia can be a very rewarding place to ship.

Can Tokopedia ship to Malaysia?

At the time of writing, Tokopedia does not ship directly to Malaysia. However, you’re not out of options. If you’ve spotted a great deal on Tokopedia and want it shipped to your home in Malaysia you can still get your hands on your goodies, thanks to various freight forwarding services here and in Indonesia. We’ll introduce a few next so you can have a look and decide if any suit you.

Bear in mind that services vary, as well as pricing mechanics. That may mean that different providers work better for different purchases - plus, some items are prohibited to be shipped to Malaysia, so it’s important to do a bit of your own research before you buy, based on the exact items you’re looking for.

How to buy from Tokopedia to Malaysia?

So, you’ve seen a great bargain on Tokopedia - what are your options to get your hands on your goodies?

You could always ask a friend in Indonesia to get your things for you and to pop them in the mail - but if that’s not an option, consider a freight forwarder. With freight forwarding services you can get things from Tokopedia and other Indonesian e-commerce platforms and have them sent on to you securely and efficiently for a fee.

Some providers may also offer a proxy shopping service so you pay in MYR and pay the provider for both the item and their shipping cost. In this case all you need to do is send the provider a link or description of what you want to buy and they’ll manage the end to end process for you. However, because the provider can set their own exchange rate, you might find fees included in the end costs to you which are rolled up into the rate used to convert IDR to MYR.

Other providers might offer an Indonesian shipping address so you can order whatever you want and pay in IDR (saving money on currency conversion if you use a handy service like the Wise card). You’ll then pay only for forwarding service to Malaysia. Here are a few to consider - and we'll have a word more on how to save with Wise later, too.

Buy&Ship

  • Offers both shipping address and/or proxy shopping service
  • Priced by weight, not size
  • Choose deliver with duty paid, or unpaid, depending on your preference

Buy & Ship2 offers the option for you to buy items yourself and simply input the Buy & Ship warehouse as the delivery address, or to use their proxy shopping service so the entire purchase is handled for you. You can choose to either cover the duty costs yourself or have them included in the cost of using the shipping service, with the final amount you pay depending on the weight of your item rather than the size3. Shipping times can vary depending on when your item arrives in the warehouse.

TolongBeli

  • Contact TolongBeli and let them know the item you want to buy to get a delivery quote
  • Priced by weight, pay in MYR
  • Shipping times vary on when the item arrives at the Indonesian warehouse

Take a look at TolongBeli4 as another freight forwarding service which allows you to pick an item from Tokopedia and have it delivered to you here in Malaysia. Items are shipped to the Tolong Beli warehouse in Indonesia before being sent on to your home, with variable fees depending on the weight and dimensions of the item bought.
