You can buy from Amazon US in Ireland, but it’ll be different from buying products within the EU. One of the big differences is that the products will all be priced in USD rather than EUR. And if you’re wondering if Amazon US ships to Ireland, the answer is also yes.
The delivery times will also be different when ordering from Amazon US to Ireland, and you’ll need to pay customs charges and extra fees.
Another thing to consider is the product range. Although you can buy many products from Amazon US, there will be certain products that are unavailable to ship to Ireland due to shipping restrictions.
When buying from Amazon US in Ireland, you may need to pay extra taxes, fees and customs duties. So it’s good to remember that the price you see when you’re on the product page will be lower than the price you’ll end up paying.
There are two main charges to be aware of when buying from Amazon US in Ireland: Value-added tax (VAT) and customs duty. Let’s take a closer look at these below.
Unfortunately, you must pay VAT on all goods received from outside the EU¹. Before 1 July 2021, you weren’t required to pay VAT on purchases under €22, but this rule no longer applies.
So no matter how little the product costs, you’ll need to pay VAT on it. The standard VAT rate for Ireland as of 1 January 2022 is 23%².
If your goods have an intrinsic value (the value of the goods alone) of more than €150 you will have to pay customs duty. And these monetary limits apply to the whole consignment, not just one item.
The exact rate of customs duty will depend on the cost of the goods, transport, insurance, and handling charges³.
Luckily, Amazon will give you an estimate of the customs fees and taxes you may owe during checkout. This means that when you order a product from Amazon US, you don’t have to worry about any surprise charges upon delivery.
Amazon will charge you for the import fees along with the rest of your order, and once the order arrives in Ireland, the carrier will pay the fees to the local authority. If the import fees deposit you pay is greater than what the Irish authorities charge, Amazon will automatically refund you the difference⁴.
Amazon US shipping to Ireland is more expensive than shipping from within the EU. There are also other factors to consider, including products that Amazon US can’t deliver to Ireland and how long Amazon US delivery to Ireland takes.
Let’s look at these considerations in greater detail below.
There are different ways to find out which products Amazon US delivers to Ireland. Using Amazon Global is one way. Other ways include using the Buy Now option or simply going to the checkout to see if the product is available.
Using Amazon Global⁸ gives you access to international brands. The Amazon Global store is a selection of items from the main US Amazon store that can be sent to other countries around the world.
The website simply excludes the items that can’t be shipped out of the US. However, it's good to double check if Amazon can deliver what you want to Ireland.
When ordering on Amazon US, you can use the Buy Now⁹ option, which enables you to pay for your products quicker than the traditional route.
After you make your first purchase, Amazon will automatically save your card details. So when you go to make a second order, you’ll be able to click Buy Now on the product page and use your saved details for a swift checkout experience. You can find the Buy Now option under the Add to Cart option.
Clicking Buy Now will bring you straight to the checkout screen, so you’ll be able to see whether Amazon US can ship the product to you or not instantly.
If you choose a product and go to the checkout, you will get a message on the screen if Amazon can’t ship the product to Ireland. This is an easy and effective way to make sure you can receive the product you’re looking for.

The exact shipping times to Ireland will vary, but Amazon US shipping to Ireland generally takes 18 business days. You’ll often have the option for priority shipping, which is faster than standard shipping, and normally arrives in 6 days⁵.
The exact delivery price will depend on the weight, type, and volume of items you’re purchasing. There’s a fixed “Per Shipment” cost and variable “Per Item” cost, which will depend on the item.
The fixed “Per Shipment” costs are the same for every European country, including Ireland. Below are the minimum costs⁶:
- Standard shipping starts at $14.99
- Expedited shipping starts at $14.99
- Priority courier shipping starts at $50.99
Unfortunately, Amazon US doesn’t offer free shipping to Ireland, so you’ll always have to pay a shipping charge.
As long as you’ve received your order within the last 30 days, you can return it via the Your Orders page. It can take up to 25 days for Amazon to receive your order, and there are a number of ways to return it.
Return methods include UPS dropoffs, DHL dropoffs, and DHL pickups. You’ll need to buy the return label, but Amazon will refund a certain amount, depending on the country⁷.
There are more than 20 Amazon websites worldwide, so Amazon US isn’t your only option if you’re in Ireland. For example, you can buy products from many European Amazon sites, such as Amazon.de or Amazon.co.uk.
Amazon UK also delivers to Ireland, and it's a popular choice due to the quick delivery times.
When buying products on Amazon US, Amazon will convert your money to dollars using an exchange rate that is not very favourable to you.
⚠️ Amazon even says that all the fees for using the Amazon Currency Converter are incorporated into the exchange rate¹⁰. You'll also notice that the exchange rate displayed at checkout may not match the rates published online or in other financial databases¹¹. On top of that, your personal bank may charge international payment fees.
The best way to avoid these additional costs is by using the Wise Account which also offers a debit card and virtual card option too.
This account will let you convert and hold more than 40 currencies while using the real mid-market rate, which is the rate you see on Google.
If you like to shop on international sites often, this could save you a decent amount of money. And not only can you use the Wise card to make purchases on Amazon US and other international sites, but you can also use it to send money internationallyto 70 countries.
