Frequently asked questions
How do I get the best money transfer rate for large transfers?

On a large transfer, the exchange rate matters as much as any fee. A small markup on a big amount adds up fast. Check any rate you’re offered against the mid-market rate, then add fees on top for the true total. With Wise you get the mid-market rate, and the fee is listed separately before you send. More about pricing.

What is a currency broker?

A currency broker is a specialist provider that helps people and businesses exchange currency, often for larger transfers like buying property abroad or paying overseas suppliers. Brokers typically offer things like a dedicated account manager and the option to fix a rate for a future date. Their pricing usually comes from the exchange rate they set for you, rather than a separate fee, so the cost sits inside the rate you’re quoted. Wise doesn’t work that way. You always get the mid-market, and the fee is a separate line item, so the cost of the transfer and what you’re paying us are shown apart.

How do currency brokers compare with banks for sending money?

Currency brokers and banks handle international transfers in different ways. Banks usually apply their own exchange rate and can also charge a separate fee on top. Brokers tend to bake their pricing into the exchange rate they quote you, without a visible fee. Either way, the real cost isn’t always obvious. Wise takes the opposite approach: the mid-market rate and the fee are shown as two clear numbers. That lets you compare our total against anyone else’s on a fair basis. More about pricing.
