XE Money Transfer Guide: A Canadian User’s Handbook

If you are looking for an OFX alternative in Canada, five options to compare are Wise, Xe Money Transfer, KnightsbridgeFX, Western Union and Remitly.
Some alternatives offer a similar online foreign-exchange service, while others are better suited to cash pickup, mobile-wallet delivery or personal remittances. The right choice therefore depends on more than the transfer fee. We will also see how Wise could be an alternative to consider with the mid-market exchange rate it offers.
None of these providers is ranked. Each one may be useful for a different type of transfer.
| Provider | Worth comparing if you want... | Useful details |
|---|---|---|
| Wise | A digital transfer with the exchange rate, fee and recipient amount shown before you pay | Wise uses the mid-market exchange rate, shows its fees upfront and charges from 0.19%*, with discounts after eligible volume thresholds.2 |
| Xe Money Transfer | A high online transfer limit without arranging the payment in person | Canadian users can send up to 560,000 CAD online, depending on the payment method. Transfers usually take 1 to 3 business days after Xe receives the funds.3 |
| KnightsbridgeFX | A Canada-focused foreign-exchange specialist, particularly for larger or recurring conversions | KnightsbridgeFX has moved over 20 billion CAD, focuses on exchange rates and keeps client funds in segregated accounts.6 |
| Western Union | More choice in how you send and how the recipient collects the money | Canadians can send online, in the app or in person to 200+ countries and territories. Depending on the route, delivery may be available to a bank account, mobile wallet or cash-pickup location.4 |
| Remitly | A digital personal remittance, especially when speed or recipient convenience matters | Remitly serves 175+ countries, supports 100+ local currencies, and delivers 90% of funded transfers in under an hour, with most arriving in seconds.5 |
Wise is worth comparing if you want to see the exchange rate and transfer cost clearly before sending.
Wise uses the mid-market exchange rate and displays the applicable fee and recipient amount upfront. Fees start from 0.19%*, with discounts available after eligible volume thresholds.2 This can make it easier to compare the complete cost against OFX or another provider using the same amount, currency pair and payment method.
Wise cannot be used for cash deposits or pickups.
Xe may suit you if you want to arrange a relatively large transfer online and track its progress digitally.
Canadian users can send up to 560,000 CAD online, depending on the payment method. Xe also provides live quotes and transfer tracking, while transfers usually take 1 to 3 business days after the funds have been received.3
The maximum amount and available payment methods depend on the transfer details. The 1-to-3-business-day estimate begins after Xe receives your funds, so the time required to fund the transfer can affect the overall delivery time.3
KnightsbridgeFX may appeal to Canadians who want a specialist focused primarily on currency exchange and bank-account transfers.
The company focuses on exchange rates, has moved over 20 billion CAD and keeps client funds in segregated accounts.6 This may make it useful for larger or recurring conversions where the exchange rate is a central part of the decision.
Western Union is a more practical alternative when the recipient needs flexibility in how they receive the money.
Canadians can send online, through the app or at an agent location to 200+ countries and territories. Depending on the destination and transfer details, the recipient may be able to receive the money in a bank account, through a mobile wallet or as cash.4
Remitly is designed more for personal remittances than traditional foreign-exchange transfers. It may be useful when you are sending money to family and want a fast digital process with recipient-friendly delivery options.
Remitly serves 175+ countries and supports 100+ local currencies. It delivers 90% of funded transfers in under an hour, with most arriving in seconds.5
Remitly is not the closest replacement for OFX when you need specialist support for a large bank-based currency transfer. Delivery speed and collection methods also depend on the route and transfer details, so check the options shown for the recipient before paying.1,5
The most suitable OFX alternative in Canada depends on why OFX does not meet your needs.
Wise may suit you when upfront pricing and the recipient amount matter most. Xe is worth comparing for a larger online transfer, while KnightsbridgeFX offers a more Canada-focused currency-exchange service.2,3,6
Western Union provides more ways to send and receive money, including cash pickup on eligible routes. Remitly is more closely aligned with fast personal remittances and family support.4,5
Compare two or three providers using the same route and amount. Check the exchange rate, complete cost, receiving method and expected arrival time before sending. If you value 24/7 human support for a bank-based international transfer, OFX may still be the better fit.1
