XE Money Transfer Guide: A Canadian User’s Handbook

Piyush Singh

XE lets Canadian customers send money abroad through its website or app. Depending on the destination and transfer route, you may be able to send money to a bank account, mobile wallet or cash-pickup location.1 Before choosing a transfer, compare more than the fee shown at checkout. The exchange rate, funding method and any third-party bank charges can all affect how much the transfer costs and how much the recipient receives.

This guide explains how XE works in Canada, which payment methods are available, what can affect the price and delivery time, and how Wise compares for personal and business international transfers.

How does an XE money transfer work?

XE converts the currency you send and arranges delivery using the method available for your chosen destination. You first create a transfer, review the quoted exchange rate and fee, provide the recipient's details, and then pay XE using an available funding method.1,2

The quoted amount matters more than a "zero fee" label on its own. XE states that it may charge a send fee and that it also makes money when converting your money. Its send rate is displayed before you confirm the transfer.2

To compare XE with another provider, use the same sending amount and check:

  • the total amount leaving your Canadian account
  • the exchange rate applied to the conversion
  • the transfer or send fee
  • any fee charged for the funding method
  • the exact amount the recipient is expected to receive
  • whether an intermediary or recipient bank could deduct another charge

How to send money with XE from Canada

1. Create an account

Register through XE's website or app. XE may ask you to verify your identity before you can complete a transfer.

2. Enter the transfer details

Choose the destination country and enter either the amount you want to send or the amount the recipient should receive. XE then shows the available delivery and payment methods for that transfer.1

3. Add the recipient

For a bank deposit, you will generally need the recipient's name, address, bank account number, bank name and the relevant routing information, such as a BIC or SWIFT code. The exact details depend on the destination and currency.1

4. Review the quote

Check the exchange rate, send fee, payment method and expected recipient amount before confirming. XE uses live rates, so the quoted send rate may change before you complete the transfer.2

5. Pay for the transfer

Select one of the payment methods available for your account and transfer route. XE will only send the money after it receives and clears your payment.3,6

6. Track the transfer

Follow the status through the Activity screen in the app or your online account. XE may mark the transfer as requiring action if additional information is needed during screening.6

How can Canadians pay for an XE transfer?

XE currently lists several payment methods for Canadian customers. The available options may still depend on the amount, account type and transfer route.3

Payment methodWhat to know
Bank or wire transferAvailable in Canada; XE's Canadian send page says a transfer must be at least 3,000 CAD to use bank or wire funding1
EFT bank debitXE can debit an eligible Canadian bank account; bank-account verification may be required3
Debit or credit cardOften reaches XE faster than a bank-funded payment, but card access may initially be limited and prepaid cards are not accepted3,6
Interac e-TransferAvailable for CAD funding, with an XE booking limit of 10,000 CAD; your bank may impose a lower limit4
Bill paymentAvailable subject to support from your Canadian bank3
Express bank transferListed as an available Canadian option, subject to the transfer details3

Your funding method can affect both cost and speed. A credit-card provider may treat the payment as a cash advance and charge its own fee, while a bank or intermediary may also deduct a charge that XE does not control.2

XE transfer fees and exchange rates

XE does not publish one fee that applies to every Canadian transfer. The price changes according to how you pay, which currencies you exchange and where you send the money.2

Cost componentHow it can affect the transferWhat to check
XE send feeXE may add a separate charge to the transferThe fee shown before confirmation
Exchange rateXE makes money when converting your fundsThe quoted send rate and the recipient amount
Card-provider chargeA credit-card issuer may apply a cash-advance feeYour card's terms before using it
Canadian bank feeYour bank may charge for a wire or another funding methodYour bank's current fee schedule
Intermediary or recipient-bank feeAnother bank may deduct a fee before the money reaches the recipientWhether the route can involve third-party deductions

The original draft's sample table could not produce a reliable cost comparison because an exchange-rate cost cannot be calculated from the sending amount alone. You need XE's live quote and a benchmark exchange rate at the same point in time.

For a useful comparison, request quotes from each provider within a few minutes of one another and enter the same amount and recipient currency. Focus on how much the recipient gets after the rate and known fees have been applied.

Are there XE transfer limits in Canada?

Yes. XE applies online transfer limits, and the chosen payment method can impose a lower limit.1

XE's live Canadian transfer flow is the safest place to confirm the amount available to your account. This matters because limits can depend on whether the account is personal or business, the payment method, the destination and the information XE has verified.

For large transfers, XE may request evidence showing the source of the money. Preparing documents such as a sale agreement, investment statement, inheritance record or business-income evidence can help avoid unnecessary delays.5

What documents can XE request in Canada?

XE may ask for an identity document and a selfie. It can also request proof of address or source-of-funds documents, depending on the amount and the countries involved.5

PurposeExamples XE accepts for Canadian customers
Proof of identityValid passport, Canadian driver's licence, national identity card with a photo or residence permit
Proof of addressStatement from a Canadian government body, CRA Notice of Assessment, GST refund letter, recent utility bill, T4 statement or eligible investment-account statement
Additional verificationSelfie, source-of-funds evidence or other documents requested during the transfer

Documents need to be clear, in colour and valid. If XE requests more information, upload it through the secure account process rather than sending sensitive documents through an unverified channel.5

How long does an XE transfer take?

XE provides an estimated delivery time as you build the transfer. The estimate can change according to the payment method, currency, destination and any compliance screening.6

Card payments generally reach XE faster. Bank transfers and direct debits can take up to four business days to reach or clear with XE. Once XE has received the payment, the transfer can take another one to four business days to reach the recipient, depending on the currency and destination.6

This does not mean every transfer will take the maximum time. It does mean you should account for both stages:

  1. The time for your payment to reach and clear with XE.
  2. The time for XE's payment to reach the recipient.

If the transfer is time-sensitive, review the estimate before confirming and respond promptly if the Activity screen shows that XE needs more information.

Is XE safe to use in Canada?

XE says it operates under regulatory requirements in the markets where it provides services and lists FINTRAC among the agencies relevant to its operations. Its security measures include multi-factor authentication, biometric verification, account monitoring and fraud-prevention controls.7

These protections do not remove the risk of sending money to the wrong person or falling for a scam. Before paying:

  • independently confirm the recipient and their account details
  • review any last-minute request to change banking instructions
  • never share a login or authentication code
  • use XE's official website or app
  • stop and investigate if someone pressures you to transfer immediately

Money transfers can be difficult to recover after delivery, so verifying the recipient is as important as checking the provider.

Wise as an alternative for international transfers

Wise is another option for Canadian personal and business transfers. It uses the mid-market exchange rate for currency conversion and shows its transfer fee before you confirm, rather than adding an exchange-rate markup.8

For a one-off transfer, compare the final recipient amount from XE and Wise using the same CAD amount and currency route. The provider with the lowest visible fee does not necessarily deliver the most money if the exchange rates differ.

Final thoughts

XE gives Canadians several ways to fund and deliver an international transfer. Its website and app show the available route, fee, exchange rate and delivery estimate before confirmation.

The most useful comparison is the amount the recipient receives after the exchange rate and known fees are applied. Also check what your bank, card provider or a receiving bank may charge outside XE's quote.

Wise offers a different pricing approach by using the mid-market rate and displaying a separate transfer fee. For personal or business payments, compare live XE and Wise quotes using the same sending amount before deciding which option fits your transfer.

Frequently asked questions

What identification does XE require in Canada?

XE may request a valid passport, Canadian driver's licence, qualifying identity card or residence permit. It may also ask for a selfie, proof of address or evidence showing where the money came from.5

Can Canadians pay XE by Interac e-Transfer?

Yes. XE currently lists Interac e-Transfer for CAD payments. XE's booking limit is 10,000 CAD, although your Canadian bank may apply a lower transaction, daily, weekly or monthly limit.4

Does XE use the mid-market exchange rate?

XE displays the send rate applied to your transfer and states that it makes money when converting currencies. Compare that rate and the final recipient amount with another provider's live quote before confirming.2

How can I track an XE transfer?

Open the transfer in the Activity section of the XE app or online account. The status and timeline will show whether the transfer is progressing or whether XE needs additional information.6
