Bonza baggage allowance. Be well prepared before you fly

Roberto Efflandrin

Luggage weight and dimensions are important factors to consider when packing for a trip involving air travel. The baggage limitations can differ between airlines and between domestic and international flights.

If you’re travelling to or from international destinations and planning to connect with local flights to explore Australia, you need to be aware of the amount of luggage you can carry with you.

Bonza is one such low-cost domestic airline operating in Australia that can connect you to cities and regional destinations in Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria.

This article will give you an overview of Bonza’s carry-on and checked baggage allowances, the cost of taking additional and excessive baggage, the restrictions on luggage pieces, and other important information.

Bonza checked/hold luggage vs carry-on?

Checked or hold baggage is the luggage that you hand over to a Bonza agent at the airport for check-in. Checked baggage is stored in a plane's cargo hold.

Carry-on baggage is the luggage that you bring with you inside the aircraft. It’s usually stored in the overhead compartments or under the seat in front of you in the flight.²

What is the baggage allowance with Bonza?

Carry-on baggage

You can take one large item and one small item onboard a Bonza flight for free. Both items should weigh no more than 8kg together.

The large item needs to fit in the overhead lockers so it shouldn’t be bigger than 56cm x 36cm x 23cm. The small item should fit under the seat in front of you so cannot be bigger than 40cm x 30cm x 20cm.

Checked baggage

Checked baggage allowance depends on the fare you purchase. A ‘Flight Only’ ticket does not include any checked baggage, but you can pay to include it later on the Fly Bonza app or at the airport.

A ‘Flight + Bag + Seat’ ticket bundle allows you to add checked baggage while purchasing the ticket.

You get four checked baggage weight options to choose from — 15kg, 24kg, 28kg, and 32kg. You can add the baggage weight that best suits your needs.

The total dimensions of an item of checked baggage — width, height and depth combined — shouldn’t exceed 140cm, and no one dimension should be longer than 100cm. A single checked luggage can’t exceed 32 kg.

Oversized checked baggage

If you have an item with one or more dimensions exceeding 100cm, it’s considered an oversized item. The item cannot be longer than 300 cm and heavier than 32kg.

You’ll have to purchase either of the two following baggage options to travel with an oversized item:

  • Bonza XL for any one item up to 23kg
  • Bonza XXL for any one item up to 32kg

Bonza baggage allowance when connecting with international flights

Bonza doesn’t offer any connecting or international flights. So, if your travel plan involves an international flight right before or after a Bonza flight, you can purchase checked baggage to accommodate luggage that won’t fit as carry-on baggage.

Buying extra checked luggage with Bonza

Bonza fares only come with carry-on baggage allowance and you’re required to purchase the checked baggage weight you’ll need while flying.

Buying additional baggage via app or at the airport

You can buy checked baggage via the Fly Bonza app before departure or at the airport during check-in. Purchasing additional baggage at the airport will cost you more compared to purchasing it at the time of booking your flight.

You can expect to pay the following prices when buying checked baggage at the airport, depending on the duration of your flight. The longer the flight, the higher the price of additional baggage.

Checked baggage weight Price at airport check-in
Up to 15kg AUD$50 - AUD$56
Up to 23kg AUD$58 - AUD$66
Up to 28kg AUD$63 - AUD$70
Up to 32kg AUD$68 - AUD$75

‘Flight only’ fare

Checked baggage is not included in a ‘Flight only’ fare. You can opt to add checked baggage after booking the tickets via the My Trips section on the Fly Bonza app or during check-in at the airport.

‘Flight + Bag + Seat’ bundle

You get to choose checked baggage weight while purchasing a ‘Flight + Bag + Seat’ bundle. You get a 10% discount if you add checked baggage with the bundle as compared to the ‘Flight Only’ fare.

Bonza fees for excess or oversized luggage

Carry-on

If you haven’t pre-purchased checked baggage and your carry-on baggage exceeds the maximum weight and dimensions allowed, you’ll need to pay for checked baggage.

Checked baggage

If your checked baggage exceeds the weight limit you’ve pre-purchased, you will be charged AUD$10 per kilogram of excess baggage.

However, if you have an oversized item, you can purchase Bonza XL or Bonza XXL at the following prices at the airport:

  • Bonza XL: AUD$73 - AUD$81
  • Bonza XXL: AUD$83 - AUD$90

Taking sports equipment or musical instruments on Bonza

You can carry sports equipment and musical instruments with you when flying with Bonza as long as they fit the allowance of either carry-on or checked baggage.

Musical instruments

Large instruments that exceed 100 cm in one or more dimensions, such as guitars, cellos, harps and double basses, cannot be brought on board as free carry-on baggage. They will be considered checked baggage and you’ll have to purchase baggage allowance accordingly. On the other hand, smaller instruments such as violins, trumpets, flutes, and others, can be a part of your free carry-on as long as they fit the carry-on allowance.

Sports equipment

In addition to the checked baggage weight allowance, Bonza allows you to purchase oversized baggage for sports equipment.

Here is how you can pack some sports equipment for travel on a Bonza flight:

  • Bonza recommends encasing surfboards, skis and snowboards in protective travel bags.
  • If you’re bringing a bicycle, pack it in a bike box. There is a limit of one bicycle per customer.
  • Fishing rods, fishing lines and hooks need to be checked in. It’s best to use packaging like PVC pipes to protect fishing rods in transit.
  • Golf clubs and accompanying equipment should be in a golf bag. Loose golf clubs will not be allowed through.

Baby and infant baggage allowance on Bonza

If you’re travelling with a small child or an infant, the infant ticket will allow you to bring an additional small carry-on onboard. This carry-on cannot exceed the dimensions 40cm x 30cm x 20cm.

Additionally, you can check in one item from each of the following categories for free:

  • Category one: a car seat, baby capsule or booster seat
  • Category two: a stroller or pram
  • Category three: portable cot
  • Category four: portable high chair

If there are any other similar additional items, they will be considered a part of the usual checked baggage and you’ll have to purchase weight allowance accordingly.

Bonza international flight partners

Bonza does not have any international routes or international partners at the moment. But you can explore Australia with Bonza’s routes connecting cities and regional destinations in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.¹

Keep in mind

In order to avail the 10% discount on checked baggage prices, you need to make sure to select both seats and baggage when booking the ticket bundle. If you miss selecting either the seats or the baggage, you won’t receive any discount.

This discount will not be available on additional baggage purchases after the booking is complete.
