Can a foreigner open a bank account with MUFG Bank in Japan?

Good news! Foreigners can open a MUFG account if either of the following applies:¹

  1. Residents working in Japan
  2. Residents who have resided in Japan for more than six months

If you are a non-resident, who does not apply to either 1 or 2, keep in mind that you will need a Residence card (Zairyu card), personal seal, and documents to confirm your Individual Number (My Number).

How to open a bank account with MUFG Bank

Opening a MUFG bank account requires the following documents and must be applied at your local MUFG branch. Unfortunately, As of March 4, 2020, Foreigners cannot open a new bank account online. Foreign residents will need to directly submit the required documents over the counter. ¹

Required documents¹

To open a bank account with MUFG Bank, you will need to prepare the required documents listed below depending on your situation. After preparing the documents, you must visit the branch in person.

  1. Residents working in Japan
  • Residence Card (Zairyu card)
  • Period of residency in Japan, residency status, etc. will be checked
  • Personal seal
  • Rubber stamps cannot be used
  • Documents to confirm your Individual Number (My Number)
  • One of the these: Individual Number card(My Number) / notification card / transcript of resident register / Certificate of Items Stated in Resident Register which shows the Individual Number
  • Documentation verifying your working status in Japan
  • Example:
    • Health insurance card with the name of the company where you work
    • A statement of withholding tax with your company’s seal
    • Employment contract
  • Note: In some cases, MUFG Bank may confirm your employment with your employer
  1. Residents who have resided in Japan for more than six months
  • Residence Card (Zairyu card)
  • Period of residency in Japan, residency status, etc. will be checked

    • Passport with your most recent visa to enter Japan showing an entry date of six months or more prior
    • Certificate of Residence (Juminhyo) with a date of becoming a resident of six months or more prior

Steps of opening a bank account with MUFG Bank

  1. Book an appointment at your nearest branch. To check MUFG branch codes, visit this page: Branch search | MUFG Bank
  2. Access the MUFG webpage online for pre-registration. Add in your personal information and print out the completed pre-registration document.
  3. Visit the MUFG branch on the day of your appointment with necessary documents. Make sure you bring your Residence card, personal seal, MyNumber Card, etc.
  4. After the registration procedure is completed, you are all set! Cash cards and bank books will be sent within 7-10 days by registered mail to the address you provided. Note that it will not be forwarded even if you have filed a change-of-address notice with the post office (As of December 17, 2024)⁸
