How to Open Up a Bank Account in the Bahamas as a US Citizen
Learn how to open up a bank account in the Bahamas as a US citizen, including eligibility, documents, banks, fees, online options and key considerations.
When you are supporting family back home or paying someone across borders, the provider you pick determines the exchange rate you get, how much you pay in fees, and how fast your money gets to your recipient. A small difference on a transfer can add up over a year of regular sending.
Choosing between Taptap Send and Wise? This guide compares both services side by side so you can see which one makes the most sense for you.
Taptap Send is a mobile app for sending money abroad.
It focuses on transfers from North America and Europe to destinations across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America. There is no web version for sending. Everything happens inside the app, which you download for iOS or Android. Most customers send through the Taptap Send app, although US customers can also send to select countries through WhatsApp.
The service is built around remittances, meaning money sent home to family and friends. You choose a destination country, enter an amount, and pick how your recipient collects the funds.
With Taptap Send, there are five ways to receive money:¹
Not all of these options are available in all destination countries. The app will show you which payment and payout methods are available when you start setting up your transfer.

Both Taptap Send and Wise can help you move money across borders.
The main difference is that Taptap Send specializes in remittance routes to select regions, and Wise is a broader international money service with wider reach and a full account with extensive features.
Here's how Taptap Send and Wise compare:
| Feature | Taptap Send | Wise |
| Supported destinations | 80+ destinations across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America² | 140+ countries |
| Exchange rate model | A margin is built into the exchange rate³ | The mid-market rate, the same rate banks use between themselves |
| Fee structure | 0 USD on many routes, with a small fixed or percentage fee on some³ | A fee shown upfront as a separate line item |
| Delivery methods | Mobile money, bank deposit, cash pickup, home delivery¹ | Bank deposits, plus funds that can be sent to a recipient's Wise account |
| Account extras | Transfer-only app, plus an in-app wallet to hold and lock a rate | Multi-currency account, the Wise Multi-Currency Card, and the option to earn interest, among others |
In short, Taptap Send can work as a remittance tool for sending money to Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America, often with no upfront fee. However, its features are more limited, and you'll likely lose a hefty chunk of your money to currency exchange rate markups.
Wise reaches far more countries, shows its fees more transparently, and comes with an account you can use to hold, spend, and receive money in different currencies.
Every international transfer has two costs: the transfer fee and the exchange rate.
The fee is what the provider charges to transfer your money. The exchange rate sets how much of the destination currency your recipient gets for each USD you send. A provider can advertise a low fee and still cost you a lot if it marks up the exchange rate.
The exchange rate is where Taptap Send and Wise differ most.
Wise uses the mid-market exchange rate, the same rate that banks use when they trade with each other, and shows its fee as a separate line before you send your transfer. You see the transfer cost and the conversion cost as two clear numbers.
In contrast, Taptap Send advertises 0 USD or low transfer fees, which looks appealing up front. But on the routes where it charges no fee, it earns its money through a margin included in the exchange rate.
That cost isn't broken out as a separate charge, so the amount you pay to convert your money is harder to see. The rate you are quoted already has the provider's cut inside it.
For one small transfer, the gap can look minor. But with regular transfers, a marked-up rate can add up to quite a lot of money.
Send money to 140+ countries with the mid-market exchange rate and low, transparent fees with Wise. Set up a free Wise account online or in the Wise app, to transfer money fast in 40+ currencies.
Over 50% of Wise payments arrive instantly* — and all Wise transfers are deposited directly into your recipient's bank account for convenience.
No ongoing fees, no hidden charges and no hassle — just fast, transparent international transfers that can beat the banks.
*Transaction speed claimed depends on funds availability, approval by Wise’s proprietary verification system and systems availability of our partners’ banking system, and may not be available for all transactions.
Taptap Send says that most transfers arrive within minutes, but the exact time depends on the destination country, delivery method, and any checks needed.⁴
Bank deposits can take up to 2 extra business days to arrive, and transfers sent over a weekend usually get there once banks reopen.⁴
Wise is fast too. When you send USD to someone in the US, the timing works like this:⁵
- ACH payments usually take 0 to 3 working days to reach the recipient's bank account
- Wire payments arrive the same day or the next working day
When you send USD to someone outside the US, delivery runs a little longer:
- SWIFT or international wire transfers usually take 1 to 6 working days to arrive
Wise gives you an estimate for how long your transfer will take when you set it up.
There's a big difference in reach between Taptap Send and Wise.
Taptap Send focuses on remittance corridors, sending from North America and Europe to 80+ destinations across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America.² If your recipient is in one of the available countries, it can work. But if they're anywhere else, the app can't help you.
Wise sends to 140+ countries and lets you move money in dozens of currencies. That wider reach makes it the better choice if you send to more than one region, or to a country that Taptap Send doesn't work in.
The amount you can send in one transfer is another point of difference between Taptap Send and Wise.
Taptap Send's limits depend on the country you send from. Sending from the US, you can send up to 10,000 USD per transfer and per day, with a matching 10,000 USD cap over any rolling 30-day period before it asks for a source of funds document. Taptap Send also has a 24,000 USD limit over 14 days. New Mexico and Oklahoma have lower limits.⁶
There are also higher tiers that go up to 255,000 USD a year once you provide extra documentation.⁶
Wise's limits are far higher. From the US, you can send up to 50,000 USD by ACH, up to 1,000,000 USD per local ACH transfer, and up to 20,000,000 USD per local wire when paying from a USD balance.⁷
If you need to send a large amount, whether for a property purchase, tuition, or supporting family, Wise gives you much more room.
Wise can do more than move money from one account to another. You can open a multi-currency account, and it'll act as a home base for money in different currencies.
Here is what you get in addition to money transfers:
A transfer-only app like Taptap Send doesn't offer any of this. If you want a single account to hold, spend, and send money, with an option to earn interest, Wise may be a better fit.
For most people, Wise may be the better option if you need broader reach or additional account features.
Taptap Send can work if you send to its supported countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, or Latin America and want a simple app for mobile money, bank deposit, cash pickup, or home delivery, sometimes with no upfront fee but almost always with an exchange rate markup.
Wise gives you clear, itemized fees, the mid-market exchange rate, reach to 140+ countries, and a multi-currency account you can use to hold, spend, and earn interest on your money.
For most people sending money across borders, Wise offers more reach, clearer pricing, and more opportunities for your money.
| With Wise, you can send up to 1,000,000 USD per wire transaction to 140+ countries, with the mid-market exchange rate and low, transparent fees. |
