Two nights cover the main sights if you arrive early and leave late. Add another night to give Coloane its own day.

Planning travel from the Philippines

Compare flights to Macau International Airport (MFM), including baggage and Philippine airport transport.

From MFM, take a bus, taxi, LRT or available hotel shuttle. Airport buses cost 6 MOP; taxis add an 8 MOP airport surcharge to the metered fare.⁴ Confirm current routes and hours.

From Hong Kong, travel by ferry or across the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge. Options include bridge buses and cross-boundary coaches.⁵ Allow time for immigration on both sides.

Detailed 3-day Macau itinerary

Day 1 — Arrive and explore Taipa and Cotai

Morning or afternoon — Arrival and hotel check-in

Allow for immigration, baggage and transport. Leave luggage at the hotel if needed, and avoid timed attractions after a late arrival.

Stay on the Macau Peninsula for easy access to heritage areas. Choose Taipa or Cotai for MFM, the LRT and major resorts. You can base yourself in one hotel for the whole trip.

Evening — Taipa Village and Cotai

Explore Taipa Village’s lanes and food shops. Try an egg tart, pork chop bun, almond biscuit or minchi.

Continue to Cotai for dining, shopping and resort displays. Book ticketed shows, then return by LRT, bus, taxi or an available shuttle.

Day 2 — Walk through Macau’s Historic Centre

Morning — Senado Square and the Ruins of St Paul’s

Start at Senado Square and walk towards the Ruins of St Paul’s. Macau’s UNESCO-listed Historic Centre includes more than 20 monuments and public squares reflecting the meeting of Chinese and Portuguese cultures.⁶

Wear comfortable shoes, start early on busy days and respect active places of worship.

Afternoon — Monte Fort and A-Ma Temple

Continue to Monte Fort or a nearby museum after checking the opening hours. Then visit A-Ma Temple, or remain around the centre to reduce travel time.

Try minchi or African chicken for lunch, or choose familiar Cantonese food.

Evening — Peninsula dinner or Cotai

Have dinner on the peninsula or in Cotai. Confirm your departure time and pack tonight.

Day 3 — Visit Coloane or depart from Macau

Morning — Coloane before a late departure

Visit Coloane only before a late departure. Walk around the village, pier and Chapel of St Francis Xavier, then stop for breakfast.

Before an early departure, skip Coloane and travel directly to MFM or your checkpoint. Leave a generous buffer.

Afternoon or evening — Departure

Collect your luggage and allow for traffic, check-in, security and immigration. Confirm cross-border schedules with the operator.

One-day Macau itinerary from Hong Kong

A Macau day trip is possible, but transport and immigration reduce sightseeing time. Leave Hong Kong early and prioritise a few areas.

Check your final connection before exploring Cotai. Stay overnight if you want more time for museums, restaurants or Coloane.

When is the best time to visit Macau?

October and November generally bring mild, dry weather. May to September is wetter, while typhoons can affect Macau from May to November and are most active around July to September.⁸ Check official weather and transport notices before travelling.

Macau entry requirements for Filipinos

Philippine passport holders are currently visa-exempt for visits of up to 30 days. Your passport should remain valid for at least 90 days beyond your intended stay. Visitors also need onward or return travel and, for stays of up to seven days, proof of at least 5,000 MOP in available funds.¹ Immigration still decides whether you may enter and how long you may stay.

Getting around Macau

Public buses connect the Macau Peninsula, Taipa and Coloane. The standard fare is 6 MOP and no change is given. LRT works well around MFM, Taipa and Cotai, while taxis are useful when a bus route is inconvenient.⁷

Save your hotel’s name and address in Chinese or Portuguese. Shuttle routes and hours vary, so keep another transport option.

What should you buy in Macau?

Popular pasalubong includes almond biscuits, egg rolls, jerky, tea and Portuguese-inspired souvenirs. Check packaging, expiry dates and Philippine customs rules.

How to pay in Macau: cash, cards and mobile wallets

Bring more than one way to pay. The Macanese pataca (MOP) is the official currency. Cards are common at hotels, resorts and larger shops, while cash is useful for buses, markets and smaller food shops. Participating merchants may accept GCash, but do not assume it will work everywhere.⁹

Set up any mobile payment option before travelling if possible, but carry a physical card and some MOP in case verification, connectivity or a merchant’s payment setup causes problems.

Hong Kong dollars are also accepted in many places, but a merchant may treat HKD and MOP as equal or return change in MOP. Check the price and conversion before paying. Read more about using HKD in Macau.

If a terminal offers to charge you in PHP instead of MOP, this is dynamic currency conversion (DCC). The terminal provider sets the conversion rate, which may include a markup. Choose MOP or “local currency” to decline DCC; your card’s normal fees may still apply.
