If you’re an overseas Filipino, being able to open a GCash Overseas account with your foreign phone number may be useful. However, it’s helpful to know that the service you get isn’t exactly the same as what you may be able to access if you were a Philippine resident. Not every GCash product is available, and fees and limits may also vary.
The GCash Overseas account is unlikely to meet all your daily payment needs as an overseas Filipino, as it focuses on PHP payments rather than multi-currency transactions. This likely means you’ll still need alternative accounts to manage your money across different currencies on a day to day basis.
You can use the GCash overseas app for a variety of day to day purposes including paying for things for loved ones at home, saving and spending. Here’s how to use GCash overseas.

Fees may apply and it’s important to check how long it takes for your payment to process to ensure you don’t miss bill deadlines.
You can also use your GCash Overseas account to buy mobile, broadband, or non-telco load in the app⁷, with variable fees applied depending on the load type and value.

Here’s how to activate GCash overseas as a new user:
You’ll get an SMS with your account status, to show when you can start to transact.
Before you start to transact with GCash Overseas it’s worth looking more closely at the GCash Overseas fees and limits which can vary from the standard domestic product.
In some cases, using GCash as an overseas resident may mean you need currency conversion. Cashing in through an overseas partner for example might mean depositing money in a foreign currency to be converted to PHP for transfer to your GCash account.
In this case, the exchange rate used is set by either GCash or their partner provider depending on the transaction type. Check the details carefully as rates may have a fee included which is added to the mid-market rate when calculating how to convert your payment.
GCash has fees for different services, such as sending money to a bank, paying a bill or cashing in. Some transaction types have the fees waived, while in many cases fees depend on the partner service you use and the exact details of the transaction.
To avoid surprise costs it’s important to check the fee for any given transaction which will be displayed in the app. Look at the GCash cost but also any partner charges - for example when sending money to a bank or cashing in through a partner.
GCash has limits on the wallet balance amount, incoming and outgoing payments. These limits are set for security and depend on the amount of verification you’ve provided for your account.
If you have a fully verified GCash account you can hold up to 100,000 PHP in your GCash account, with a 100,000 PHP incoming payment limit¹⁰.
GCash Overseas is a streamlined version of the full wallet that’s offered to local users in the Philippines. Some features and services, including investments, lending and some other financial products aren’t available to overseas users.
If you’re a GCash Overseas account holder it can also help to know that you can’t send money to other GCash Overseas accounts - only to local GCash customers who reside in the Philippines.
GCash Overseas may suit overseas Filipinos who need to send money in PHP or pay bills linked to the Philippines. It also offers access to a PHP savings account through the GCash and CIMB partnership.
Before choosing to open a GCash Overseas account, weigh up the pros and cons and think carefully about whether all the features you need are covered. If you need to frequently transact in currencies other than pesos, an alternative product like the Wise account might be handy instead of - or as an addition to - the GCash Overseas account.
