The CIMB Travel World Credit Card¹ sits firmly in the mid-tier travel card segment within CIMB’s top travel credit cards in Malaysia – positioned between the entry-level CIMB Platinum and the ultra-premium Travel World Elite. It's a strong fit for frequent travellers who want meaningful perks without paying for benefits they'll never use.
In this CIMB Travel World Credit Card review, we break down everything you need to know: the new lounge access rules, the hidden overseas fees, and the rewards structure in full.
We'll also tackle something that often flies under the radar – foreign exchange costs. Because even the best travel cards in Malaysia can quietly bleed money when you're spending abroad. That's where a multi-currency card solution like Wise can help you keep more of what you earn.

CIMB Travel World’s rewards structure is compelling. But here's where the costs can quietly add up, and where many travellers get caught off guard.
Every overseas transaction incurs a 1% administrative foreign transaction fee imposed by CIMB, on top of a currency conversion mark-up set by Mastercard. If you choose to pay in Malaysian Ringgit at the point of purchase, you'll also face a Dynamic Currency Conversion fee, again determined by Mastercard.
ATM withdrawals abroad are even pricier. Using your CIMB Travel World Credit Card at an overseas ATM triggers a 5% cash advance fee (minimum MYR 15, whichever is higher), plus finance charges of 1.5% per month or 18% per annum, calculated on a daily rest basis from the transaction date to full settlement.
These costs aren't always obvious upfront, but they can significantly impact how much you actually spend abroad.
This is where a multi-currency account like Wise becomes relevant. Unlike traditional credit cards, Wise uses the mid-market exchange rate – the same rate you'd find on Google – with a small, transparent fee stated upfront. It also offers 1,000 MYR fee-free overseas ATM withdrawals per month, up to 1,000 MYR or equivalent, with a low fee after that.

Now, let's look at the CIMB Travel World Credit Card benefits in detail, starting with its headline feature.
The rewards structure is built around travel spend, and the earn rates reflect that:
- 8X Bonus Points on overseas, airlines,* and duty free stores
- 2X Bonus Points on other local spend
- 1X Bonus Points on local education, local insurance, and local utilities
*Airlines spend refers to retail transactions made directly with airlines – such as ticket and in-flight purchases – and does not include flight bookings made through physical or online travel agencies.
The smart move is to use your CIMB Travel World Credit Card for flight bookings and pre-trip expenses, where the 8X Bonus Points and automatic travel insurance kick in. Timing larger purchases to align with promotional campaigns – such as hitting the annual spend tier for a fee waiver – adds further value.
On lounge access, the card is one of the stronger Malaysia credit cards for this tier. Cardholders enjoy up to 12X access to 150+ selected Plaza Premium Lounges worldwide, though this access is shared between the principal cardholder and any supplementary cardholders, and is limited to Plaza Premium First and Plaza Premium Lounges. It's worth checking the CIMB Travel World Credit Card lounge access list before you fly.
The 12X Sky Lounge and Sky Lounge Xpress access at SkyPark Terminal, Subang Airport comes with a condition: a minimum spend of MYR 2,000 in the same calendar month. That access is also only valid till 31 January 2027.
The bottom line?
This card performs best for pre-trip spending – booking flights and hotels in foreign currency to rack up 8X Bonus Points. Once you're on the ground overseas, daily spending and shopping will attract FX fees. Pairing it with a multi-currency travel wallet like Wise lets you spend at the mid-market rate while abroad, with no FX mark-up and 1,000 MYR fee-free ATM withdrawals up to 1,000 MYR per month.
If you're eyeing a step up, the CIMB Travel World Elite Credit Card⁴ raises the ceiling on most fronts: a 10X Bonus Points earn rate, more generous lounge access, enhanced travel insurance, data roaming, and more.
But those extras come at a price. The minimum annual income requirement jumps from MYR 100,000 to MYR 250,000, and the principal card annual fee rises from MYR 554.72 to MYR 1,215.09.
There is a current promotion running till 30 September 2026: new-to-card CIMB Travel World Elite cardholders enjoy an annual fee waiver with a minimum of MYR 15,000 spent within 120 days of card approval. The standard waiver requires a minimum of MYR 120,000 in total annual spend.
One genuine advantage of the Elite card is that it waives CIMB's additional 1% bank admin fee on currency exchange. That said, you're still subject to Mastercard's exchange rate mark-up, and the waiver doesn't apply to Dynamic Currency Conversion.
Upgrading makes sense if you meet the eligibility criteria, travel heavily, and want premium perks despite the higher fees. For most mid-level travellers, the standard CIMB Travel World Credit Card already delivers strong value.
The CIMB Travel World Credit Card is one of the stronger mid-tier travel cards in Malaysia. The 8X Bonus Points earn rate, lounge access, and up to MYR 300,000 in travel insurance make it a solid pick for Malaysians who travel several times a year – without the eye-watering fees of ultra-premium alternatives.
Just keep the fine print in mind. FX mark-ups and a 5% ATM cash advance fee can erode your travel budget faster than you'd expect.

The Wise card lets you spend in 40+ currencies at the mid-market rate including CNY, JPY, GBP, and SGD so you know you'll be getting a great deal in over 150+ countries. Simply create a free Wise account, order a card and top-up MYR to get started.
Virtual cards are free and can be added to your Google or Apple Pay wallet, while a physical Wise card can be ordered for a low fee of 13.70 MYR. Having a physical Wise card allows you to make chip and pin payments, as well as two free ATM withdrawals to the value of 1,000 MYR each month, before low fees start.
While abroad, you can choose to spend with directly in MYR and let auto-conversion do the trick, or convert to your desired currency with your Wise account. Either way, you’ll get the exchange rate you see on Google, with low, transparent fees from 0.71%.
