🎓 Finland student visa application

In order to study in Finland, Indian students are required to apply for a student visa, which is also called a Residence Permit. The Residence Permit lets you stay in Finland for over 90 days and will be valid until the end of your program in the country.

You will need to apply for a Residence Permit before you arrive in Finland. And the process requires that you complete an application online and complete your biometric information in-person at a visa application centre in India.

You are required to have been accepted into a Finnish educational institution to qualify for a residence permit. The institutions include:

  • Universities
  • Universities of applied sciences
  • Vocational education institution
  • Upper secondary schools, in certain cases

If you would like to study in Finland for additional post graduate studies after having completed your Master’s, you will need to apply for a residence permit for scientific research.

You will also have to show either payment of tuition fees to the institution or ability to pay the tuition fees as part of your prospective application.

⏲️The Finnish Residence Permit is typically issued for 2 years at a time. But if your program is shorter than that, it will only be issued for the duration of the studies

A Residence Permit does allow students to work in Finland as long as the work is related to the degree that they are studying for. You can work an average of 25 hours a week during your academic program, and without restriction during holidays or breaks.

Once you have completed your studies in Finland on your Residence Permit, you can be granted a Residence Permit for an additional year to look for a job in the country or apply to further studies.¹

🛬 If you are going to Finland to study for less than 90 days, you can apply for a Schengen visa. However, short term study visas are not currently an option on the VFS Global Finland site from India.

The Embassy of Finland in India is the ultimate decision maker on granting visas to the country. However, Indian applicants will be working with the visa application centres through VFS Global to process and submit applications. VFS Global for Finland operates centres across major hubs in India:

  • New Delhi
  • Mumbai
  • Chennai
  • Bangalore
  • Hyderabad
  • Kolkata

The VFS Global centre will accept payment, take your photograph and complete your biometric data collection to finalize your application.²

Let’s take a look at the process for completing a Residence Permit application.
