Before you head out to make your payment, it’s useful to know that Western Union marks up the exchange rates offered to customers sending money overseas. Here’s the statement from the main Western Union webpage:
“Western Union also makes money from currency exchange.”³
This may come as a surprise - but it’s a pretty common practice among international payment services. By adding a markup to the exchange rate, payment providers can use low headline transfer fees and still make a healthy profit. It’s not transparent and can mean you’re paying more than you think for your cross border payments.
If you’re planning on sending money directly to someone’s bank account, take a look at Wise. Wise does not add a markup to the exchange rate - you’ll get the same rate you see on Google every time. There’s just a low, transparent transfer fee, which can work out much cheaper than regular banks and other competitors. You’ll be able to set up your transfer online for convenience - and have it delivered quickly into your recipient’s account. No hassle, and no hidden fees.
