Western Union is a handy service if you need to get a cash payment to someone urgently. But it’s not necessarily the cheapest way to send money.
Western Union - like many money transfer services - adds an extra fee onto the exchange rates used. This is made clear on the Western Union webpage - but still comes as a surprise to many people. Here’s what Western Union states in the footer to their main webpage:
“Western Union also makes money from currency exchange.”⁴
If you’re planning on making a payment directly to someone’s bank account, you could get a better deal with Wise. Wise offers customers the real mid-market exchange rate with no markups. This usually represents better value, and keeps the overall costs of a transfer down. Spending less on fees means more to spend on yourself.
