You can use your Simplii Financial® debit card in Canada and abroad wherever Mastercard® is accepted.¹ However, foreign transaction fees apply when you use your card in another currency.
Here's a closer look at the costs of using your Simplii debit card overseas, including spending limits, ATM withdrawal fees, and currency conversion charges. If you want to use your Simplii Financial card abroad, you'll need to consider the provider's foreign transaction and currency conversion fees. These costs can add up quickly if you travel abroad frequently.
When you pay in a foreign currency, Simplii will convert your transaction into Canadian dollars. The transaction is converted to Canadian dollars using the applicable exchange rate, and a 2.5% foreign transaction fee is added.²
This additional charge increases the total cost of the currency conversion. Most banks and financial providers charge a markup on the standard exchange rate for currency conversion. This is a common pricing structure among banks, but it can increase the overall cost of international spending.
You may also pay Simplii's currency conversion fee for international ATM withdrawals. When you withdraw cash abroad, a converted Canadian dollar amount will be posted to your account. This is based on the conversion rate Simplii pays, plus any fees.
Some ATM providers may also charge an additional fee for withdrawals outside Canada, so make sure to look into all your options before withdrawing cash overseas.³
Mastercard will use its own exchange rate for some foreign-currency transactions.⁴ The final converted amount may vary slightly depending on the exchange rate applied at the time the transaction is processed.
It can help to compare the rate applied with the mid-market exchange rate, which is the benchmark rate you may see online. This is the standard interbank rate you might see online, with no markups or hidden fees for foreign currency exchange.
Wise, a Money Services Business in Canada, offers an alternative approach to international spending. You can use your Wise card to spend in 150+ countries worldwide, including Canada, the US and the UK.
You can order a digital card quickly, make ATM withdrawals within set limits, and see currency conversion fees upfront when spending abroad.
You can use your Wise card to:

As well as Simplii's debit card foreign transaction fees, you'll need to consider any additional limitations for using your card abroad.
You can only use your card where Mastercard or Interac® are accepted. Although Mastercard is a popular provider, your debit card may not be accepted everywhere. Acceptance may vary depending on the country and merchant.
You can withdraw cash outside Canada, but you'll need to find international ATMs that are compatible with Interac, Mastercard, Maestro®, and Cirrus®.¹ You'll also need to look into any additional charges for taking out cash overseas.
Your Simplii debit card spending limits may vary by account type. Customers with a Simplii Financial No-Fee Chequing account can enjoy unlimited debit purchases and cash withdrawals, for example.⁵
Check your transaction limits in your Simplii Financial online account or confirm with the bank before making large purchases overseas.
You can spend up to 250 CAD by contactless payment. However, you may need to insert your debit card and enter your PIN when spending money abroad.¹
The Simplii Financial debit card can be used in Canada and abroad, but it's important to understand the costs of using it overseas.
Simplii's debit card foreign transaction fees include a 2.5% currency conversion charge for international payments. You'll need to look out for these costs before you spend money abroad online or in person.
If you're looking for an alternative focused on transparent exchange rates and fees, Wise is another option to consider. You can spend in over 150 countries using the mid-market exchange rate, with transparent fees shown before you convert.
